(continued next page) HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN . . . that the best way to keep busi-ness good in your hometown is to trade at home, with your recognized merchants? They're your neighbors and friends. Is Community Participation Limited? The South East Independent is the ONLY newspaper in the entire world devoted to the promotion of the Southeast area of Salt Lake City and County. 'We are the ONLY community paper in the Southeast section of the city. We are the ONLY newspaDer whose interest lies solely in this area. However we are, as some people state; "only a weekly" (?) issuing a minimum of 5000 copies each Thursday. In spite of this attitude, in some we are interested in the entire region covered by our paper. We are Interested in every person living in the area. We are interested In every business, regardless of size, and its success as a member of the Southeast area and the Sugar House Chamber of Commerce. With all this in mind it is somewhat difficult to understand or accept publicity campaigns-whic- are limited and directional in benefits. But in spite of this we will give BIG with our smallness and will become a full fledged member of the community when "accepted". We will always remain independent as our name implies with no one, regardless for what reason, having any control over us or our principles. We only wish to be judged on our honesty of effort. his career. However, when pre-senting a public figure to such an important group as the teachers of Utah, does not an honest look Into the background of their guest seem appropriate. Mr. Hays, the record shows, has served as vice chairman of the Sponsorship and Participation Committee of the Southern Con-ference for Human Welfare, a Communist front. He also has been vice chairman of the Conference for the State of Arkansas. As for Dr. William G. Carr, here is an example of some of his thinking: "It seems to me that we should, with all loyalty to the United Nations, teach that the world organization should be revised to take on some of the aspects of a system of World Government and World Law. Unwillingness to face this is perilous... if the United Nations is to be transformed into a limited world government, the psychological foundation for the wider loyalties that are necessary MUST BE LAID, in part, IN THE SCHOOLS. I urge you, therefore, not to teach only about the United Nations, as it is today, but also.. ..TEACH THE ATTITUDES WHICH WILL ULTIMATELY RESULT IN THE CREATION OF WORLD GOV-ERNMENT.... These remarks he made to a gath-ering of secondary-scho- ol prin-cipals. At another time he advocated: ' ' Teach these attitudes which would result ultimately in the creation of a world citizenship.. .WORLD GOVERNMENT, WHEN AND IF WE GET IT. WILL BE THE PRODUCT OF PLANNED EDUCATION." The UEA convention is an ex-ample of "planned education." If the leadership of this group can, with no opposition, foist upon its members these kinds of persons as their featured guests men the awareness of the teachers as to the fundamental issues of Amer-ica's struggle is nil. No wonder that surveys in leading magazines show our young people abandoning Let's be realistic. No prop-aganda is successful unless well concealed in fact and high sound-ing principles and a welter of words. Let the teachers be or guard. MERLE RICHE Left Wing, One Woriders Featured At UEA The Utah Education Association is to be commended for making their convention an outstanding event of the year. They can be com-mended also for some of the speakers and ev-ents that will be offered to teach-ers. Their featured speaker, the Hon- - orable Brook Hays is listed as the convention keynoter and, I suppose, it is proper for the UEA to dwell on some of the better aspects of You And You Alone Are Responsible The responsibilities of all citizens will be definitely increased during the next few weeks. Election time brings to all of us the necessity of making decisions that can effect our lives, happiness, homes and businesses. Public apathy towards elections seems to increase as the number of candidates and area of country involved in an election decreases. We all know that this is not as it should be but we seem to take the attitude that smallness means unimportant. The officials that will be elected in the coming city election will have more of a direct and day to day influence on our lives and way of life than those in other levels of government. If during the next two years we have an inefficient city administration it is tne fault of the public and no one else. Make yourself fully acquainted with all candidates, their records, and (if possible) why they are running tor office. Get your 'information from people they have worked with or people who have worked for them. Was a man a success in his previous position, did he have the admiration and respect of his associates? When a person runs for public office you have the right to ask the questions necessary to determine to your own satisfaction his honesty, integrity and sincerity of purpose. REMEMBER IF YOU DON'T VOTE OR DON'T VOTE IN-TELLIGENTLY YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO GRIPE LATER Bride, directing friends to her house in a new development: 'Til take my African violet out of the front window so you can tell which house Reader's Digest. Paste Pot Palaver Rough streets, unpainted lines in streets and cold wet weather-t-hat is a combination that should make the garage man happy All summer long when I have gone riding with the Boss Man I have gotten the dog-gond- est shaken up on some of the wash board streets. To tty and name all of the rough streets that have needed repairing all summer would take up more space than the Boss Man will ever let me have. Any way the chuck holes on 1st West and the waves on 21st South will serve a good enough example. Of course, things will continue to get worse as the cold and wet weather sets in. Also they can't do much about fixing them during the winter temperatures so folks you are plum stuck till next spring. Of course the fact that the streets have been in such a condition for a month or two or more is some-thing I shouldn't mention, I guess. As for the directional paint-ing of lines on the streets things are just as bad as they have been all- - summer. The best example of 'that is between 1st West and State Street on 9th South. I have said so much about this already and ,no one paid any attention that I guess Til just not say much more but just spend my spare time down on the corner there watching the fun as the drivers try to figure out just what it is they are supposed to do.
