Show m Page 2 Sugar Home, Utah Thursday, Jane 26, 19S8 INDEPENDENT Editorial This month is my Country's Birthday and I am thinking of what living here means to me. Not just that in my Country an average guy like me has the highest standard of living in the world-automo- biles, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, mechanical toys, safe conditions, acres of land yet to be homesteaded..Jm thinking of what's behind these material blessings. When I think of my Country, I see men like myself sitting lehind desks, feeding furnaces, farming land, tamping ties, man-ning production lines, waiting on people, and after work driving our own cars to homes we own and I feel good inside. I feel good inside because my wife meets me at the door smiling, not wearied. The money I earn has 'bought modern appliances to lighten her work. She won't be toil-wor- n to die at 45 or 50... like my grandparents. She will be healthy and vital to enjoy with me a comfortable retirement. I feel good inside, because the? money I earn will pay for an education for my kids, and they may become doctors, lawyers, engineers... or Presidents. When I think of my Country I see men like myself giving a good day's work for a good day's wage, with time and energy left to watch a ball game, or play cards, or watch television, or take the kids fishing, because I don't have to work 14 hours a day, 7 days a week for $2.50 a day. Men I have helped elect to office have repaid my confidence in them by passing laws to insure my working reasonable hours for a reasonable wage. When I think of my Country, I see men like myself who after dinner, stand on the front porch, look at the sky, and predict tomorrow's weather...men who leave for work content that their home and family will not be threatened while they are away. I feel good inside because in my Country men accept freedom as their birthright, an assume it not to be otherwise. I see in my Country men with a chance, the freedom, to strive... to achieve, and I am glad. Classified ADS Practically New Tractor For Sale. Complete With Plow and Disc Attachment. Good Price. Similarly, the world looks up to a person who displays more than usual courage and determination in his efforts to accomplish a worthwhile objective. Such is the case of Lee Morrison, ld son of Mr. and Mrs. Jean Morrison, 2892 E. 7320 South, in the Cottonwood Heights subdivision, who has courageously refused to let the handicap of a missing arm deter him from putting forth the ex-tra effort it takes to compete with his fellows in the great game of baseball. Where many would have sat back with a defeatist attitude of "can't" because of even a lessor handicap, Lee braved the diffi-culties before him to make a bid for a spot on one of the Little League teams of Western Boys Baseball. Not quite winning a place on the "major league" team last year, he gave his all on a "minor league" and gained enough experience so that he was able to gain a spot on a "major league" team this year, and no boy in the entire game could be more proud of his uniform than is young Lee Morrison. High commendation is due those who inaugurated and current-ly sponsor the boys baseball organizations which have swept the country these past few years. Probably no other activity or project has given so many youths the opportunity1 to engage in activity and develope their self confidence and initiative as has this worthy program. If anyone doubts this , assertion let him but visit a few of the scores of playgrounds and diamonds through-out Salt Lake City and County and see the happiness it is giving hundreds of youths using their lusty energy in a wholesome, directed pasttime.
