Show Utah Power Will Assist In The Development Of A Nuclear Power Plant Utah Tower and Light Co. has joined with more than 50 other independent utilities in an offer to develop and build a prototype nuclear power plant "which will provide a major short-cut to economic production of electricity from the atom." The offer was made in a proposal filed, with the Atomic Energy Commission by the newly organized High Temperature Temper-ature Reactor Development Associates. The proposal responds re-sponds to an AEC invitation to industry to undertake the building of a high temperature, gas-cooled 'nuclear power plant. Announcement that Utah Power and Light had joined in the project was made by E. M. Naughton, company president. presi-dent. George M. Gadsby, bctxrd chairman of Utah Power, is vice president of the development develop-ment group. Robert E. Ginna of Rochester, N. Y. U president presi-dent The 40,000 kilowatt prototype proto-type atomic electric plant which the firms propose to build at a cost of $21.5 million was conceived by General Atomic Division of General Dynamics Corporation. , The high temperature plant would be built somewhere on the system of the Philadelphia Electric Co., one of the member of the group. It is scheduled for completion late in 1962 or early in 1963. Mr. Naughton said. The reactor will be a high temperature, gas-cooled, graphite graph-ite moderated type devised by General Atomic Division of General Dynamics Corp. The plan contemplates a reactor with special advantages for use in generation of electricity including simplicity, low fuel costs and safety of operation. The development group is a non-profit association of investor-owned utilities ranging from New York to California and Hawaii. Their offer is contingent con-tingent on the AEC providing $24.5 million for research. Entire cost of the project would be $39 million. |
