SUGAR HOUSE ROAD E O PLANN ED BY JAYCEES The Sugar House Junior Cham-ber of Commerce has been as-signed the sponsorship of the Teen-ag- e Road-E-- 0 for three high schools in this area. The local Jaycees will he co-operating with the Salt Lake or-ganization in preliminary trials pointing toward state-wid- e and fin-ally nation-wid- e competition. The program is sponsored na-tionally by the Junior Chamber to foster safe driving among teen-agers. It tests teenage driving ability with written and behind-the-whe- el examinations. The Sugar House club will be conducting competition for stu-dents from Highland, Granite and Olympus high schools on May 11 at a site yet to be named, ac-cording to Cal Ashton, local Jay-ce- e in charge. The winners will compete in a state-wid- e Road-E-- 0 on June 1. FUNERAL SIRVICE TODAY FOR EUGENE J. NEFF Funeral services will be "held to-day in the East Mill Creek Ward chapel for Eugene Jefferson Neff, 74, patriarch of the East Mill Creek Stake of the LDS Church. Mr. Neff died Thursday in a Salt Lake City hospital after a brief illness. . He was a native of East Mill Creek, born there March 29, 1883, a son of Amos Herr and Eliza Ann Hughes Neff. Mr. Neff was a former bishop of the East Mill Creek Ward and a well-know- n sheep and cattle grow-er in Utah, Wyoming and Cali-fornia. He was president of the Hawaiian Mission from 1923 to 1927 after serving there as a mis-sionary from 1904 to 1908. He married Louis Chamberlin November 10, 1910. She survives as do two sons and three daugh-- ters; nine grandchildren, three sisters and a brother. Friends may call at the chapel, 2702 Evergreen Ave., from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Services will begin at 1 p.m. under the direction of Bishop LeRoy M. Strand. Burial will be in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. NAME OFFICERS PIONEER LUNCHEON CLUB New president of the Utah Sons of the Pioneers Luncheon Club is Salt Lake County Commissioner Edwin Q. Cannon. Mr. Cannon, unopposed on the ballot, was elected last week dur-ing a noon luncheon meeting. D. Crawford Houston was elec-ted first vice president and T. Quentin Cannon, second vice presi-dent. New members of the board of directors are Sheldon R. Brew-ster, V. Clyde Cummings and George Wallace Fox. Secretary Dennis J. Murphy and treasurer Albert J. Elggren were re-elect- ed. Morgan Sr. and Hor-- First Security Sights Utah Employment Record Employment in Utah is approxi-mately 229.00Q, up 7,000 over 1956 figures, the First Security News Letter reported this week. Figures do not include agricultural employ-ment. The News Letter is published by the First Security Bank system and is edited by Mr. EIRoy Nelson, First Sscurity vice president and economist, assisted by Harvey Frazier. "Retail sales for the intermoun. tain region are slightly higher than last year's with some increase in food sales," the report shows. "For the first two months de-partment store sales were up two percent, with most of the increase noted in Salt Lake City." New car sales in Utah for the first three months of 1957 were down 3.5 per cent, although March sales were higher than last year's. Authorized building construc-tion in Utah for the first three months totaled $25.6 million, down 13 per cent below last year's. In Idaho's nine major cities 1957's first quarter showed construction at $4.6 million, 18 per cent above 1956 figures. "In Utah, dwelling unit authorization totaling 1,283 is down 23 per cent, valuation down 18 per cent," the News Letter says. "In Idaho, authoriza-tion for 125 dwelling units in nine cities is 4 per cent below that of last year." The report notes that produc-tion of most nonferrous metals is "about the same as last year's," the index of prices received by farmers is up 6 per cent, and steel productiin in Utah for the first two months of 1957 was 25 per cent higher than last year's.
