Show the future of utah and the uinta basin A ABOUT B OUT three weeks ago plans for g one of the most far reaching water dav diversion enion programs ever projected were m made ade public the program calls for the diversion of waters from the green and colorado rivers in eastern utah to irrigate and re reclaim clairn additional dit ional acres of land in the state at the same time it was disclosed that an appropriation of is being asked from the state legislature to be matched by an equal amount to be sought from a federal agency for fo r launching a study of engineering detail construction costs and other essential data with which to formulate complete plans for the sweeping project it has been estimated that in 15 years the population of the state would be doubled through natural expansion of agriculture industry and tourist trade along with this development lies the future of the uinta basin this vast project calls for the construction of dams along the two rivers and a reservoir at flaming gorge northeast of vernal that would rival for scenic attractiveness boulder darn dam and lake mead the mile aqueduct that will carry water from the confluence of the two rivers in eastern utah to the wastelands of the state will traverse the uinta basin and with its vast system of canals and ditches will bring new life to this area this project would be the means of putting many additional acres of land in the uinta basin under cultivation it would mean cheap power for the development of the basins great mineral resources it would no doubt mean a railroad and a development such as this section has dreamed of since its invasion by white settlers the first step in the program is securing funds for the investigations of the project two bills now before the state legislature call for an appropriation of and a small levy by which towns cities water districts etc may participate in the project our first job then is to work for the approval of these two bills the first of which is senate bill and the latter senate bill the way to support such measures is to let your senator and representative know how you feel by letter wire and telephone dont stop with your own legislators either send letters to other members of both houses |
