Show excavators EXCAVA TORS FIND FOSSILS ON C CAMPUS the university of utah geological museum contains many hundreds of very old oid fossils and bones of prehistoric creatures but those fossils that have been on the campus longer several thousand years longer than any other fossils in the museum have just been discovered within the last week on that part of the campus where crowds will gather next winter to watch utah athletes per form bones of tour four animals were found by workers excavating for the new university of utah field house we have determined that they had a natural not an artificial burial and so have a basis for estimating their age said dr hyrum I 1 um head ot the bui ve sity department ot geology ane animals ale aie of the cene age or latter stages or 01 lake bonneville latteen to twenty five years ago the university campus was covered with water ot ol lake bonneville at that time and th burial bunal place of the animals was probably mud flats or very near the shore two skulls and the bones that go with them are definitely of the cloven hoof type animal they are probably camels but that is not definitely proven yet other bones are of a small animal with tiny jaws and teeth like those of a present day rodent the other bones are probably those of a pleistocene horse most people think of camels as an animal found only in the tropics said dr schneider camels lived in this country fifteen to twenty five thousand years ago when it was much colder than it is now |
