Show missionary relates interesting experiences in european countries nathan allen alien returns to roosevelt Kooi evelt alter after 34 months abroad nathan allen alien son of mr and mrs jesse allen alien of roosevelt who returned home sunday after spending the past 34 months in european countries has some very interesting stories to tell young allen alien fulfilled a mission for the L D S church spending most of his time in liege belgium bel 9 aum ium and lausanne switzerland both french speaking areas which are a part of the french mission in liege he learned the french language and spent about eight months in the mission office as secretary after which he was transferred to lausanne switzerland on lake geneva located about 60 miles from geneva famed location of league of nations living in switzerland he said was a pleasure after living in belgium where the standard of living is low and the common people are very poor th the e chief diet in liege which is the center of a coal mining and manufacturing area is boiled potatoes and meat and beds upon which the missionaries slept I 1 were anything but comfortable switzerland is much cleaner the homes are better and there is more to eat in switzerland he was president of the district and traveled around among the branches a good deal nathan reports that the missionary work was very interesting and at all ail times people were friend ly tine the church is growing in switzerland and more and more people are becoming interested in it t nathan said tour of europe following nathans release the end of january he spent two months traveling through central and southern europe where he was able to see first hand the result of the war scares military preparedness pa redness and life in the dictator nations during the munich crisis last as t september nathan was in france visiting one of the branches included in his district trenches for safety during air raids were being hastily dug all taxis were taken over by the government for transportation por tation of troops and museums were stripped of their treasures which had haci been crated and taken to cellars for sate safe keeping many people were thrown out of work because industry was almost at a standstill during this war scare following his release from the mission nathan went first to genova geneva switzerland where he saw the exquisite buildings of the league of nations built with the finest materials from all over the world from there he went to paris where he visited such famous places as versailles the magnificent ent home of the french kings the world renowned louvre museum which houses such treasures treasur as the paintings of whistlers mother the mona lisa by leonardo da vinci and the statue of venus ue de milo he was em pressed with the eiffel tower the cathedral of the notre dame the tuil eres gardens and the beautiful streets and boulevards of the lovely city from paris allen alien traveled south to the french riviera stopping at cannes during the visit there of the kings of denmark and sweden cannes is a resort city for the wealthy internationals who often spend the winter season there monte carlo was the next stop where a visit to the famous gambling casino was interesting after a short visit at genos italy the birthplace of columbus and a stop continued on page eight missionary RELATES interesting experiences IN than it was into france nathan said you are more closely watched and your money and belongings are arc more carefully checked the huge number af of policemen in in rome was amazing nathan natha n said that pedestrians were required to walk on the left side hide of the street only and this he thought was to give the policemen something to do the ancient ruins of the coliseum the wonderful new nev buildings and stadium built by mussolini st peters famous church and the catacombs cata combs dating back to the first days of christianity impressed the traveler after visiting the enchanting isle of capri and the cities of northern italy including florence and venice nathan arrived in vienna austina Aus Aust tiia fia here he said many of the jewish stores were closed and covering the name of the shop was a sign printed in both german and yiddish the austrian people with whom nathan talked expressed dissatisfaction with german rule on tile the train trip between vienna ad prague capital of the look healthier and happier and seem more intelligent li ent the standard of living is hi higher lier in denmark when in copenhagen pen hagen the capital of denmark nathan learned that oscar anderson son of mr air and mrs airs peter anderson of roosevelt was only about two hours away in i malmo alaimo sweden he went to see him and reports he is getting along I 1 very well is enjoying his work and is president of both his branch and district after a rough trip across the english channel which made him seasick for the first time nathan spent some pleasant dleasant days in ln lm ion don seeing the sights after which he embarked on the t he S S manhattan for new york city and america the feeling of relief in returning to america was almost overwhelming wh elming nathan said to get away from the strain and worry of air raids and government restrictions strict ions to feel tree free again to have the opportunity to go to school even though you are not a rich mans son to live in america is worth more than anything else nathan said and europeans feel this too as most of them have a wish to live here nathan felt his experience in the mission field was very valuable I 1 and have given him a broader view of life but he is glad to be home e and his many friends welcome v el him here after his long absence |
