Show A letter from sweden I 1 have boon been thinking that per haps some of you would like to read about my trip to sweden and about some of the conditions and customs in sweden so I 1 have I 1 asked the editor of the standard I 1 to publish this article on december the third a group of missionaries left salt lake city in a special railroad coach we traveled through omaha chicago and buffalo and took a side trip to niagara falls where we enjoyed the brilliance of its colored illumination at night and its magnificent dynamic appearance in daytime from niagara we traveled to new york which ot of course was the most interesting place we saw during the whole trip among some of the places we visited were the empire state building and radio city radio city is especially interesting because it is thoroughly ultra mod ern em in in every respect and therein one can see and study every ini invention that is known to man we also visited the music hall the worlds largest modern theater we sailed out of now new york december ninth aboard the S S a ship weighing fiat fifty Y two thousand tons and capable of carrying fourteen hundred i people it employs a crew of seven I 1 hundred and burns eight hundred tons of oil per day the ocean was rough most of the way but 1 managed not to get seasick I 1 december fifteenth we sailed into cherbourg Cher bourg france where we saw some french airplanes and battleships practicing war maneuvers and targeting from cherbourg Cher bourg we sailed to southampton england in england I 1 was surprised to see many green fields and much green fo ilage after seeing part of lon don I 1 left the missionary group and began my journey alone to sweden I 1 crossed the north sea on the S S SUECIA a comparatively small boat which has since been sunk in the baa off the coast of Got ensberg sweden as the result of a collision with another boat no lives were lost however it was an elaborate ship with excellent accommodations and very modern in every way I 1 arrived at my destination december twenty first sweden is quiet slow movin peaceful and I 1 believe generally behind america in most every way radios and automobiles are not nearly as common here as in america and on the streets art an seen numerous handcarts hand carts anc an horse carts many of the old anc shaggy buildings are still be being ing used the me people here never worry about not getting enough moisture for their farms in fact one of the main problems here is in draining the water from the land sweden is spotted with many lakes and the country is nearly all composed of hills and sloping land with many forests of pine trees already I 1 have had some good ski rides on these mountain slopes to all my friends at home I 1 send my greetings I 1 have been in sweden now nearly three months and I 1 am beginning to understand and speak the language since I 1 have come here my testimony of the truth of the lat ter day saint gospel has greatly increased I 1 hope that I 1 can continue to enjoy the good spirit of missionary work may I 1 wish every one of you success and happiness very sincerely oscar anderson |
