Show news of the reser reservation IRMA HARRIS editor INDIAN CHILDREN by miss aima jones teacher at the uintah boarding school where we walk to school each day indian children used to play all about our native land whore where the shoos and houses stand and the trees were ve very ry tall and there were no streets at all not a church and not a steeple only woods and indian people only wigwams on t the he gi ground 0 und and at night bears prowling round what a different place today where we live and work and play A few indians are still here in their native land but it is indeed a different world for them they live and work and play much according to their own ideals in so far ar as limited circumstances will permit the indian child spends the greater part of his life in school learning the ways of the conqueror those friends who have cared at all what became ot of him have given their energies toward malting making a white maul man of him the training and encouragement they have given have been greatly worth while the lamentable tact fact is that in the eagerness to teach him for algil culture his friends have neglected to nourish that culture which the indian already had athe poet artist and musician have found inspiration for their greatest art in the I 1 indian and there is an intense interest all over this country in the real american thousands of people envy us of our contact with them the smallest piece of hand work made by an indian child Is valued by most americans there has been something of great value in the indian race we who tire are teachers of indians feel this contact a privilege and our desire is to help them th em to accept their precious inheritance and train themselves for useful participation in modern american life the whole world would welcome the old type of indian art music physical form and adoring spiritual nature the employees of the uintah indian school are spending their energies to awaken the tr true ue lal indian spirit and create a n new w ambition m we follow the utah state course for instruction and this alone is supposed to occupy the teachers full energies add to this the difficulties of a new language and you may have a faint idea of our task it takes patience on the part of the child and teacher but above all complete sympathy between the two in the second grade this year we have used indian art for most of our decoration we have tried to bring the home life and school life as close together as possible the indian fair motivated our work for the first few weeks some of our handwork was exhibited there T we e m made de a special study of 0 indian designs and symbols after the fair we took up a study of nature in con lection with indian summer we stressed the harvest which the 4 11 club members were reaping anticipating next years club work we vs studied seeds and their important place piare in life this arose naturally from a lesson in the elson reader about the tha magic a pots just now we are basing our lessons on the hibernating bea bear r connecting it with the next indian bear dance next week wo we plan to begin with the indians who helped the pilgrims we use the elson basic readers and work books and have six sets of supplementary supplement alry readers we have a room library of 0 about ono one hundred and fifty volumes we encourage independent and original work especially in silent reading we use standard mont ment tests and the results as a whole have been encouraging wo we are proud of our school and of our children and we invite the public to come and visit us at any
