Show I 1 TO THE FARMERS OF UINTAH badih by ALFRED POWELL now as we are approaching the most important time ot of our lives as citizens of america let us weigh in our minds that which will be lor for our best interest and welfare as aa a people and use our best judgment on the ath day of 0 november 1924 to send the right men back to washington those that belleve believe in making laws that will protect our I 1 home industries I 1 I 1 have been farming in tho the uin I 1 itah j tah basin tor for over 40 years and it has always been the cry protection was the only help out the sheep men now it if that is the case ho how w many farmers are these in the uintah basin who have a few sheep on their farms now it if the tariff on the wool helps out the big sheep men it la is a sure thing it helps out the farmer who also has a few sheep on his faim it we have only one sack of 0 wool to sell cell in the spring and a few ew lambs in the fall all protect protection ioni helps us too but that is not the only thing with the farmer today that we are bene fitted by there Is the alfalfa seed now tho the year before we had a 4 cent tariff on the alfalfa seed I 1 raised seed and it cost me 76 cents per too pounds to have it cleaned arid and the best price I 1 could get at that tha t time was 8 cents per pound and store pay at that I 1 asked the reason why it was only 8 9 cents per pound and the reply was that the bars were let down and there was no protection on the products of the american farmer I 1 have been informed that there has been tour four hundred mortgages paid off in the uintah basin thru the good price of alfalfa seed it if we had had no tariff on alfalfa seed there would have been tour four hundred mortgages added to the list instead ot of being released it if the farmer had to pay 76 cents per pounds pound a for cleaning his seed then have to sell it tor for 8 cents per pound in store pay and acid hay at per ton in the stack and all other products accordingly where would we be today now think last year there was 80 car loads of alfalfa seed shipped from price utah by the farmers or seed raisers of the basin and surrounding country receiving on an average ot of per acre tor for the alfalfa seed grown on the farm the report tells us that there will be from 19 to 20 million millio n pounds ot of seed raised in utah in 1924 it that Is the case and the 4 cent tariff was taken off and the country become flooded with alfalfa seed and we had to take 8 cents per pound forit we as farmers would feel the heavy blow if we remember that in about 1919 there were several ship loads ot of butter shipped into america because there was no protection tor for the tanners farmers we only got trim IS 18 to 20 cents per pound for or our butter fat at there were 12 car loads of 0 this butter shipped into uta utah h and our market was flooded again our products had bad to compete with foreign stuff now what are we getting getling today tor for our butter fat and what have we been getting for or the last tour four years from 36 cents to 40 cents per pound now that I 1 is a through having the right kaaid ot of men in washington D X C to help make our laws and protect us as a pe people ople by putting a tariff on the thin things gs which are shipped into our J c country f from rom foreign countries I 1 have been asked by ma many ny it I 1 t thought hought the bottom would fall all out ot of the seed market as the price was declining on the seed my reply was that it Is up to us it we send the right kind ot of men back to wash washington ington to make our laws to protect the american citizen and producers we will be nil all right when we to lo to the polls to cast bur vote lot let us use se our best judgment and work for or our own interest as I 1 pl a people and not got kick afterwards if 1 we put the wrong me men n in who will not work for or our interests as american citizens |
