Show the oil S hales of the uintah basin the united states geological survey after an extensive examination of tali basin ot of northeastern utah and northa northwestern estern colorado have issued a report which goes u long way to relieve the anxiety which may exist as to the the future oil supply or of the united states this supply will come both from wells and the enormous oil bearing which are found in the aln tali tah basin in thickness and richness in oil and low cost of 0 distilling equaled anywhere in the world it is estimated that from this source alone barrels of oil Is the estimate made by the united states geological survey atter atler an echaus exhaustive tive exaltation exal nation ot of the entire uintah basin see bulletin no the figures given above are staggering and almost beyond hiir our comprehension I 1 this oil can only bi be obtained by distillation and for this purpose a number of plants are now operating and many more are under construction many methods have been tried for the profitable extraction of oil from and as in all other linis lines of business many failures have resulted but after the expenditure of much time and money both by individuals and companies distillation of oil from oil has passed beyond that experimental stage and a new era in the production of oil Is 18 here to stay and here let me me state that from the oil from northeastern utah and northwestern northwest ern colorado will in the future produce many t times 1 me 8 the tha amount of oil produced from all the oil wells that have ever been drilled in the united states since oil was discovered in this country now just what is oil shale of what is its component parts quoting from an article from J B jensen in the shale review he says FIrst that oil contain the remains of small plants and animals which were deposited with mud and sedera sediment lt to form our present present Sec dInd that the remains of these have been preserved until the present time and that they contain hydrogen carbon and a small percentage of nitrogen the combination being known as third that these elements can be dis associated by the proper application I of heat in the absence of air and can in aa a way to form oil and other products by the process knowli known as distillation i I 1 fourth that vegetable matter mattert produces produces base oil that ani mal produces asphalt oil and that nitrogen combines with hydrogen and forms ammonia fifth that the products formed may be a light gas a fluid oil or a solid olid S lne depending upon whether only a few or a large num ber of atoms combine to malce make the I 1 molecule I 1 sixth that at least two series are formed the pa raffine series wherein the atoms always arrange themselves I 1 on the proportion of twice as many plus two of the hydrogen as of ota carbon and the olefin series wherein I 1 the arrangement is just twice as many hydrogen as carbon atoms hydrogen and carbon does also combine in mariy many other pro proportions proportion portio ns but we are only concerned here with the ones just mentioned seventh that it requires rany many more atoms ot of hydrogen than of car bon to make these combinations and when there Is not sufficient hydrogen to combine with the carbon that fixed carbon or coke is a result as illustrated lust rated in dry distillation and that shale should not be crushed to a fine powder for treatment but from two to six inches in diameter tor for retorting by the scotch process that there Is no connection whatever between oli shale and petroleum as pumped from wells is Is the general opinion of geologists the amount of 0 oil contained contal ned ln in the great shaie fields of 0 the uintah basin is so great that alie the figures are staggering As for instance there is one ledge of 0 shale in the hill creek country uintah county thirty feet thick that will average over 40 gallons ot of oil per ton of 2000 each acre ot of this ledge alone barrels of I 1 oil or barrels in i acres 11 il at present prices the oil that could be removed from one acre of this class of shale would be worth A mill or plant on this fedgo mining tons a day for days a year would require years of continuous operation on on igo acres and such a llanil plant would produce over barrels a day ana earn card a net profit of 0 a year Is it to be doubted then that the estimates made by leading mining men bien in salt lake and denver that good shale shale lands ari are actually worth 1000 an acre and upward and will soon be selling for more more than that sum my own investigations lead me to the following conclusions shale I 1 lands ands can now be obtained that have an almost unlimited supply ot of oil the methods ot of mining distilling and refining have all been worked out toa to a complete success and no experimenting need be made the supply ot of crude oil in the united states Is notably short ot of demands and will be tor for many years it if not for all time the amount that will be proA produced fro from M shale in the 1 next twenty years cannot 9 supply the shortage and finally the shale oil industry offers the most attractive sate safe and permanent business enterprise that will bo be handled with good business methods grow into one ot of the count rys largest most prominent and profitable enterprises placing the production ot of oil on a manufacturing basis and eliminating all losses and speculation while it offers all attractions of 0 profit that come from drilling producing wells in addition the production in a given plant will be steady and permanent and not constantly s decreasing as Is the case from oil wells when we consider that the by pro ducts recovered from the oil are worth nearly as much as the oil some idea of tho the great wealth locked up in natures treasure valets can be imagined tet let me here state that the of the uintah basin are the richest and n d most extensive ot of any in he world and have less over burden making the mining of the shale easy and cheap WM ONEIL |
