Show OLDEST OF AMERICAN GRAPES scuppernong originated in north carolina before 1760 vine Is productive and vigorous the scuppernong Is probably the oldest cultivated varl variety acty of native american grapes will while ae the place of origin cannot positively be stated owing to the age of the variety it has been pretty definitely established that it originated in tyrrell county north carolina before from the vicinity of its origin the variety was distributed throughout the alie eastern part of north carolina and was planted in vineyards ranging in size from a few vines to mary many acres from these vineyards tile the variety was gradually distributed distributed over the costal plain and piedmont sections of the southeastern united states it has steadily dlly increased in popularity and is today the leading variety of the muscatine grapes the vine is productive and vigorous a rank grower with long slender smooth yellowish canes covered with small lightbrown light brown dots or lenti cels it thrives best enwell drained sandy loam soils the leaves are always of medium size with the margin medium serrate in texture the leaf is smooth 4 treelike grapevine of great age and rather thin in comparison with other varieties the cluster is small having one to fifteen but generally two to six berries the berries average three f fourths ou of an inch in diameter and when fully ripe vary in color from pearly green to reddish brown depending on the amount of exposure to the sun of the individual cluster and berry they ripen fairly early and the individual berries shatter readily from the cluster wise when ripe the skin of the berry Is medium tough and Is covered with numerous small russet dots and sometimes russet blotches blotcher blot ches |
