Show Joint Action Saves Irrigation Water For years farmers getting water wa-ter from the High Creek canal in Cache county, Utah, had been losing more than half the water turned in at the head of the canal. ca-nal. During the spring high water season this was not so bad. But later on in the summer when water was so badly needed need-ed to mature crops, the loss was often disastrous. Finally, reports Vern Hopkin, chairman of the Utah Produc tion and Marketing Administration Administra-tion committee, the farmers decided de-cided to take action. A survey showed that about 51 per cent of the water was being- lost where the canal crosses cross-es a section of land filled in by gravel from an old riverbed. Organizing a pooling agreement agree-ment under the Agricultural Conservation program, they lined the section of the canal where the greatest seepage occurred. oc-curred. As a result, loss of water wa-ter was reduced to less than 8 per cent. |
