They made possible swift publication of news, increased circulation circula-tion of newspapers, opened the way for advertising so -important to the development of American industry and business. They brought books and periodicals within' the reach of the masses, which helped to bring the people of this country the highest standard of enlightenment in the ' world. . .' However, there were skeptics then as now when ' new , . inventions are born! Publishers were skeptical, .printers feared it as did compositors who expected to be deprived of employment, as one machine performed the . work of four hand compositprs. The contrary proved true. The new equipment stimulated the expansion of the press. Employment Em-ployment in the printing trade actually increased by almost al-most 100 per cent. Ottmar Mergenthaler, without subsidy or guaranty, worked out his invention at his own expense, assuming the hazard of failure in commpn with most of the American inventors who have helped to make this country the greatest great-est ever known. The magnet which drew him to the United States as a youth was the magnet of opportunity under epitalistic free enterprise and free competition.
