Show Cougars Claw Utes For .19 -6 Win In Football Opener As had been predicted by football dopesters in and about the state, Union High School) scored a 19-6 victory over a fighting band of Utes from Uintah Uin-tah High last Friday on the Cougar's Cou-gar's field, to establish them as the team to beat for the Region 5 championship they won last year. With Don Killian, John Benson Ben-son and Doyle Huber leading the Cougars in their offensive drive that netted them 10 first downs against two for the Utes, Union looked impressive in their win. Defensively the Cougars Cou-gars were a pretty powerful team as well, with Scott Ed-rington, Ed-rington, a big, fast guard, aided by several other youngsters, making things mighty tough for Uintah. The Utes received the Cougar's Cou-gar's kisckoff to start the game, and after being held for downs, punted to Union's 6-yard line where the safety man touched the ball, only to have it slip from his fingers, and a Redman fell on the ball. Terry Ross on the second play after the fumble, fum-ble, hit the center of the line for a touchdown. The try for extra point was wide and Uintah Uin-tah was ahead 6-0. The Cougars repeatedly drove deep into Indian territory during dur-ing the first quarter, but two 15-yard 15-yard penalties and a stubborn Ute line kept them from scoring. scor-ing. However, shortly after the second period opened Don Killian, Kil-lian, hard-running full-back, on a quick opening play raced 35 yards for Union's first score. Doyle Huber's kick was good and the Cougars led 7-6. Robert Stolla intercepted a Ute pass on the 50-yard line, and the Cougars began to roli. Killian lateralled to John Benson Ben-son for a 15-yard gain, and Milton Mil-ton Mecham moved the ball to the 10-yard line. Benson sliced off-tackle and over the goal line for what should have been the Cougar's second TD 'but the officials ruled a Union man clipped a Ute, and the touchdown touch-down was not allowed. The Cougars were threatening threaten-ing to score again as the gun ended the half with the ball on Uintah's 10-yard line. Shortly after the Utes had kicked off to Union to' open the second half play, the Cougars began a march down field with Benson, Huber, Mecham and Killian Kil-lian taking turns advancing the ball, with the latter scoring his second TD as he crashed through the center of the line to run the score to 13-6. Huber's kick was, low and the ext-a point was not allowed. Big Craig . Hutchings, substitute substi-tute tackle, used his 6 ft. 5 in. to a good advantage and blocked a Uintah punt, which was recovered re-covered by -the Cougars on the 3-yard line. Again some Cougar was caught violating a rule. this time using his hands illegally, illegal-ly, and a 15-yard penalty pushed the scrimmage line back to the 18. On the first play after the penalty, Killian whipped a beautiful beau-tiful pass into the waiting arms of end Gordon Eldredge, who crossed the line for the final touch down. Again Huber's place-kick was low, and the score read 19 fox Union and 6 for Uintah. Coach Elden Wright's team looked impressive in spots, with a few weaknesses that most generally gen-erally show in the first games of the season. He has oodles of reserve strength, both on the line and in the back field. Pass defense is the most obvious weakness so far. Coach Chris Axelgard, who' is making his debut into high school coaching circles has whipped a green bunch of kids into a fine organization one he and all the Ute supporters can be proud of. They played some fine football against the Cougars, and can be trouble for the Cougars ere the season ends. Moab comes to Vernal this week for a Friday contest, with Union drawing a bye. |
