Show Uintah Schools Get Aid To Educate Indians Award of a $28,23.05 contract to Uintah County School District, Vernal, Utah, for the education of Indian children in the public schools of the county has been announced by the United States Department of the Interior. The contract negotiated between Fredrick M. Haverland, Phoenix Area Director, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Max Abbott, Uintah County superintendent of schools, provides financial assistance in education of 283 Indian children in the public schools of Uintah County for the 1956-57 school year. The contract was negotiated under the provisions of the John-son-O'Malley Act of 1934 which authorizes the Bureau of Indian Affairs ' to provide financial assistance, as-sistance, on the basis of need, for the education in the public schools of Indian children residing on tax-exempt tax-exempt land. Public school opportunities oppor-tunities for all Indian children is the long-range objective of the Department of the Interior. |
