Show By Robert S. Muidock County Agricultural Agent AN OPEN LETTER TO LIVESTOCK OWNERS COW BUSINESS In the' United States today there are more than 95,000,000 cattle. That's' quite a bunch of cattle maybe 10,000,000 too many. Of These 95,000,000 cattle, Utah has 675,000, and of these Duchesne County has 50,000. The records show that YOU own some' of these cattle. Perhaps yours are beef cattle or they may be dairy cattle, but regardless of the breed, they all must sooner or later be sold. I am sure you will agree that there is something wrong with the cattle situation today. Possibly a lot of things are' contributing to the unfavorable position of the cattle business in our present economy. Possibly some of these things can be remedied. Probably some of them can't. I think you will agree that there isn't much you and I can do as individuals, so what I am getting around to is the necessity of working together to-gether with the rest of the people owning cattle, to see if we can discover what can be done to improve im-prove the position of the cattle business economy throughout the nation. We have today a numbeT of very active and worthwhile organizations working toward a solution of our many problems. I would say that at the head of this list would be the National Cattleman's Association, with its headquarters in Denver and having hav-ing a membership in almost every state where cattle are grown. At least twenty-eight states have Cattle Associations that are members mem-bers of this National Association. Our own Utah Cattle & Horse Growers Association has always and is today doing much to help the cattle owners. The Utah Cattle & Horse Growers board of directors is made up of one rep- resentative from each of the twenty-nine counties'. Duchesne County is the only county that does not have a county cattle-association. cattle-association. Recently seventy cattlemen of the county met and decided to form an association, to be known as the Duchesne Cattle Association. Associa-tion. Most of those present paid their membership fees of 100 per head on cattle owned and they selected a temporary board of directors and directed them to draft a set of Articles of Incorporation Incorpor-ation to be presented at a later date for the consideration of the members. These articles have been prepared and a meeting has been set for early in January where the Articles of Incorporation and a set of By-Laws will be presented for approval of the members. Also a board of directors of nine members mem-bers one from each of the nine districts throughout the county will be elected to serve as a permanent board of directors. In order for this organization to function to the best advantage of the cattle owners they will need the moral and financial support sup-port of all cattle owners of the county. This letter is being sent you as an invitation to join the movement from which we hope we will receive benefits, and as a member to help the directors to do the best job possible'. While we know that $5.00 bills are not hanging around the cattleman's fences these days, we feel that if through the efforts of all' the men who are willing to work on this Association board they will have bettered our cattle prices 4 cent per lb., which would be $2.50. on a 1,000-lb. animal, so if in any year you sell ten head you will have paid your association dues for 5 years. Cattle prices, while they may be the one pressing press-ing problem today, are only one of many effecting the cattle grower grow-er continually, to mention a few Brand Iaspection, Disease Control, Public Ranges, Taxes, Transportation, Transporta-tion, Control of Cattle Numbers and numerous others. Somebody has to work to make these movements move-ments successful and everything you do these days costs money. . While it is true that there is always a few that are willing to ride on the other fellows gas, we feel that they are very few, and in most cases wouldn't help i any organization. We invite you to join in this movement and help make it work for the benefit of all. For further information contact any of the nine' directors or Robert Murdock, Secretary of the Association. Asso-ciation. Dues for this association will be $5.00 minimum or 100 per head. They may be sent in to the County Agent or handed to one of the area representatives. |
