Show I'TAR STATE EXTENSION SERVICE AdUICULTUBB UOMB ECONOMICS By Louis A. Jensen County Agricultural Agent This is the time of year when stockmen should check their herds closely for infestations of cattle lice. With the coming of cool weather these pests become be-come numerous and if allowed to go uncontrolled will result in a serious reduction of milk flow in dairy cows. In beef cattle a reduction in gains will result as well as a general unthrifty condition con-dition of infested cattle. If control con-trol measures are not taken lice multiply very rapidly throughout through-out the winter months and in some cases has even resulted in the death of animals. Now is the time to spray or dip. Even if there are only a few cattle which have lice right now they will infest the others. The small cost will be repaid many times in increased growth and milk production throughout the winter. DDT, Rotenone and B H C are effective in the control of most types of cattle lice. The proper proportions to use in the solution will be determined by the strength of the materials, whether you are dipping or spraying, and the pressure used in the case of spraying. The salesman sales-man or dealer from whom you purchase the materials or the County Agent can advise you as to the proper amount to use. |
