Show Merchant Marine Opens Training For New Cadets Utahns can now apply fos appointment ap-pointment to the U. S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps, commonly referred to as the Annapolis of the Merchant Marine, it was announced an-nounced today by Commodore R. R, McNulty, USNR, Supervisor of the Cadet Corps at Washington, Washing-ton, D. C. Candidates must be unmarried citizens not less than 16 years and 6 months of age and not yet 21 who possess fifteen units from accredited schools, which must include iVz units in mathematics; 3 units in English; 2 units in Science (one of which must be in physics); and one unit in History. In addition candidates must furnish furn-ish evidence of the completion of at least five and one half units in other subjects. Scholastic and physical examination exam-ination requirements similar to those of the U. S. Naval Academy must also be met. Five points will be added to the grade of any unlicensed un-licensed man in the U. S. Merc-ant Merc-ant Marine' or the U. S. Maritime Service who has had at least 6 months service aboard ship. j Applicants presentlv in high school who do not possess the required re-quired scholastic units on date of submission of application will be permitted to take the examinations examina-tions if they submit a statement signed by the principal of the school certifying that they are scheduled to graduate in May or June and if they pass will have he units by that time. Candidates will not be ordered to report to Cadet Schools until July 1, 1946 thus permitting them to receive their diploma from accredited schools. The Cadet training course includes in-cludes one year at a cadet school followed by a year aboard merchant mer-chant or training vessels and two years at the Academy, King's Point, N. Y. Graduates presently receive licenses as deck or engineer officers of-ficers in the U. S. Merchant Marine Mar-ine plus commissions as Ensigns in the Naval Reserve and the U. S. Maritime Service. Applications should be made directly to the Supervisor, U. S. Merchant Marine Corps, Training Train-ing Organization, War Shipping Administration, Washington, 25, D. C. before Marcn 1, 1946. |
