Show Sfcok PubSicafion Names 1946 Man f The Year In Livestock uHjM vuh, uoio. '"Man of the Year in Livestock" is the title I given Josef Winkler, Castle I Rock, Colo., rancher, by the j Record Stockman in its 1947 Annual Edition. This pioneer livestock publication has been selecting the outstanding stockman stock-man annually for the past four years, awarding the honored man not only national fame, but a plaque, during the National Western Slock Show. Josef Winkler came lo the United Stales in 1907-as a penniless pen-niless immigrant from Austria He started work as a "hand" , on the G E Ranch near Castle Rock. Today he owns the ranch which he has built up from 3,-000 3,-000 to 6,400 acres of deed land and 2,000 acres of leased land. He has made phenomenal success suc-cess in the Shorthorn cattle world, showing his feeder calves and yearlings to top places in major livestock shows the past 22 years. "The Winkler departure in Shorthorn type paid off." said The Record Stockman.' "His feeder calves showed the way. They gave heart to a down-in-the-mouth set of Shorthorn breeders who were hanging onto on-to the breed only because of a loal, going-down-with-the-ship attitude. "Many persons did not believe thai the Shorthorn could come back, could ever meet Hereford and Angus competition again. Jo Winkler's Shorthorns not only met the competition of the Whitefaces and the Blacks, but topped it at Denevr last January. Jan-uary. Once again proud heads of Shorthorn breeders were up. "Jo pointed the way and he, probably more than any other man. gave new life which has resulted in the sensational re-iuvenation re-iuvenation of the Shorthorn breed the past few years." Mr. and Mrs. Winkler have an "outstanding family" of four daughters and three sons. It was two daughters, Helen and Frances, Fran-ces, who showed his Shorthorn feeder calves to the grand I championship in last year's great I National Western Stock Show. I THE Record Stockman's tribute tri-bute to Winkler listed these reasons for his selection as "Man of the Year in Livestock:" "Man of the Year for his untiring un-tiring persistence over adversity, for his silent determination that hurdled all barriers language, finances, initiation to a strange new land on which he planted his hopes and his future. . . "Man of the Year for his almost al-most single-handed creation of a new Shorthorn beef type, giving giv-ing a lift to the breed that is more abrupt, more far reaching than any development ever registered reg-istered in the reds and roans. . . "Man of the Year for his better bet-ter than two decades of Shorthorn Short-horn feeder cattle showmanship, culminating in 1946 with the National Western grand championship cham-pionship for Shorthorns at the world's greatest feeder cattle competition, placing the breed back in the royal purple after a lapse of more than 15 years. . . "Man of the Year for his modest mod-est achievement as a successful, typical western rancher, as well as consistent cattle exhibitor, father of a large outstanding family, each member a credit to his self-made name." |
