Show HEAVIEST SNOW STORM IN HISTORY AT PARK zion national park jan 9 1037 the heaviest snow storm ever known in the history of zion kion national park was still in progress here on oil january G when a total of 0 50 inches had fallen since december 27 this measurement was tal taken c n at th the 0 els east t t entrance on the mt carmel road comparable records have come from other stations three and one half feet at the temple of Sina wava in zion canyon and 20 indies inches at the south entrance near Sp ringdale according to old timers there has not been a storm to equal this one since 1902 and many insist that this is the worst they have ever known kno n tor for this section snow has been falling so rapidly that the snow plows have often been unable to keep ahead of the storm in spite of being operated day and night delays in mail service through the lie park have however never been b greater than 20 hours park officials a are re using every means in their power to keep keel the mt oarmel carmel road open and have also been able to keep part of tho zion canyon spur road open most of the time auto traffic to the temple of Sina wava however has been possible during but one day since december 27 motorists are warned not to attempt tile the mt carmel road nor the upper canyon road without chains ch lis the few motorists who have braved the storm report that zion canyon pa is a unique and beautiful spectacle in n its deep mantle of snow which in in many places clings to almost vertical walls and forms odd patterns against the cliffs opportunities for unusual photographic work have been rare however due to low hanging clouds park rangers fortunate enough to tie be equipped for skiing have hare opened up tip several small ski runs at the base of the great white throne and report that the snow is deep enough to provide winter sports in the park for some time lonzer linger ski and toboggan runs fire are heing being planned in the region around the east entrance in contrast to this pleasant picture of holiday sports Is 11 the grim business of making skiing patrols to cedar breaks rangers attempted the usual monthly la petrol arol on january 5 only to be tun apu ipu lack back iy ay by powdery snow and deep drifts no farther patrols will he be made until the ell end of the month when it I 1 is hoped conditions will have improved |
