Show fewer strong men found among recruits of today R in the army are deter lor acing in physical standards since the days ot of the civil war mar according to harold W jones and oth er officers of tho the army medical corps during a recent investigation meas ure ments of 0 recruits mere ed and it mas found that the P per er of strong men enlisted Is by tar far the lowest at the present day only 33 per cent as aa against 57 per c cent in 1875 the men considered weak at the present time are 43 per cent as against 10 per cent in 1875 at is called to the tact fact that the percentage of foreign born borit recruits has fallen from more than 60 per cent to 0 about nine per cent it Is suggest ed that many of the recruits obtained years ago mere TI ere hardy german and irish emigrants of stocky build which may account tor for the great dif ference in the percentage of strong men we must take the figures cautious ly says abit officer As I 1 have said I 1 think there is no doubt that ne me are getting a different type of man in the service today from what we me got ears ago he be may be just as good and he ma have more brains but he be does not seem to have as much brawn whether theiA the present day recruit would mould last as well moll under the old con dillons of hard frontier service with sanitary conditions far interior inferior to those of the present time is hard to sa but I 1 think it doubtful doubtful it if he would mould the high percentage of strong men in 1876 to 1879 may be due to the tact fact that the recruiting at least in this part of the country countr nas mas not tery nery active then and the army could pick its men accepting only the hard lest iest and best finally I 1 believe fur ther investigation along the lines sug bug in this paper in other parts ot of the country might tell us whether our standard is really deteriorating or not |
