Show ! defensive bocks i ( A 1 S ,:r" . .. oJbSX 'Cl itPxm V$1 83's finest defensive backs in Davis County include Wade Bevans (V) h.ninr Av.-i VX). Sieve Sargent (IV). Mark Miller (0) and Jeff ParrJ "(C). J Thieves in the J Night Who Hit Every 1 9S3 All-Davis County defensive back player, proved to be quite an athlete through the year. The reason is that everyone of them were stars on offense perhaps as much . if not more than on offense. The five that were selected were certainly one talented group of ' all-stars. JEFF PARRY, CLF1ARF1ELD HIGH ' i Clearfield's Jeff Parry could have easily been our No. 1 choice as the all-county quar-i quar-i terback. On offense he played nearly every down as quarterback and certainly proved to ', be one of the most talented at his position. BUT PARRY, w hen needed, also did a job forBrent Hancock on defense. Parry started at a defensive back position his entire junior year, j In several situations. Parry entered the game as a defensive back and was able to come up ( with clutch plays for the Falcons. STEVE SARGENT, DAVIS HIGH Davis' Steve Sargent starred for Davis all season long as their No. 1 signal caller, but he was just as valuable and did just as good a job from his defensive back position. AS A QUARTERBACK, Sargent completed nearly 50 percent of his passes and on defense - : usually came away with 50 percent intercep-- intercep-- tions when he went against someone one-on- one. "He wasn't one of the fastest or perhaps the strongest," said Sawley, "But he was definite- fy the smartest. He always kept himself in great position and could read the moves of the re- ceivers." MARK MILLER, DAVIS HIGH One thing aiding Mark Miller, Davis' fine defensive back and runningback, was the ex- X perience he gained his junior season. For two years he started for Ward Sawley in the defensive defen-sive backfield. AS A RUNNLNGBACK he didn't fare bad at all, scoring seven touchdowns and gaining over 400 yards in rushing. But it was on defense where he probably helped the most. "He was the person who held everything together. He was real good at making mak-ing sure everyone knew of a certain situation. He was outstanding for us, kinda like a defensive defen-sive general for us," said Ward Sawley. JUNIOR AVEI, WOODS CROSS Junior Avei is a quiet shy type kid but put him in a football uniform and in the defensive secondary and things start to happen. He doesn't speak with his mouth but rather his deeds and this past season he was one of the top defensive backs in the area. HE HAS good size, excellent quickness and a nose for the ball. Where the ball went Junior was right in the action. He came up with five interceptions on the season with the biggest thrill being an interception against Ogden that he returned 68 yards for a touchdown. WADE BEVANS, VIEWMONT Wade Bevans is out of the same mold in that he let his actions speak louder than his mouth. Wade loved to play defense against the pass but one got the impression that his first love was coming up and hitting someone on the run. LIKE ALL good defensive backs Wade has good instincts and seemed to know where to be on any given play. He certainly knew what he was doing against rival Bountiful as he came up with four interceptions, and was a thorn in the Braves offense all night. He has the speed, quickness and instincts to play some college ball. |
