conjoint institute last thursday friday and saturday and the pedagogues gues had one long continued feast of good things thiap for the ted redi ind logical mind mi throng throughout out the sessions the train from the north on thursday brought all the bachers ta chers J from that direction in the two counties and with them was state superintendent superintend n t A C nelson prof moniah hall and superintendent in miner aliner of sanpete county prof stew art did not arrive until friday afternoon tile the first thing that impressed the visitors was the quantity and consistency ot of rith red juicy mud which clung to them like a brother and crept as fir far hs as it dared on the pedal extremities of mule male and female alike this did not detract much from the enthusiasm of tile the occasion when the train arrived the teachers of the richfield schools were at the station to meet the teachers and give them the glad hand bind the visitors were conveyed in rigs to the tabernacle and there the committee met them and apportioned them to the various arious places of accommodation which had been arranged for FIRST SESSION the first session of the institute was vas more in the nature of an informal reception than a lecture session it opened with an overture the golden sceptre tre rendered in an admirable manner by the orchestra prayer was offered by joseph S horne home the richfield MW male quartette rendered pale in the he amber west anest and nd were loudly applauded they responded with r the bamboo tree the address of welcome was delivered by H N hayes haes in his inimitable style he was in his best mood and a vein of genuine wit and humor pervaded the address which left nothing to be desired no fitter words of welcome was ever delivered deli ered to a bevy of bright teachers than that of mr hayes when he extended the freedom of the homes of the city to the visitors the response responds was made by superintendent miner who thanked richfield most cordially for the welcome extended to the teachers and urged the visitors to appreciate all that was waa efferd he made reference to the splendid attendance and urged the teachers to make the object of their attendance at institutes a seeking for higher ideals rather than attendance because the law demands that they attend miss clara hall of manti mania sang A dying flower in a sweet soprano voice and as a response to vigorous applause she sang the message prof mosiah hall of the U of U spoke for short time informally expressing the hope that the present institute would be productive of good A bit of blarney was sung by john hool hood and for an encore he be san sang ie he I e ramble superintendent nelson was introduced and gave one of hit short characteristic te talks which put every teacher in ILI good hur or he represented tint that utah is forging ahead education illy and that a matter matte of about per day is spent pent in the state for education in ill the matter of compensation the played b frank wilcox wilcot in ilia his masterly style and delicately accompanied by mrs anni anna calliway callaway the audience derr deir anda and eicole an mr air wilo wilcox responded gitil simple arcu played anith M the same delicate skill prof hall deliN delivered ered his first lecture at this session ills his was forming habits and he built up a splendid discussion of good and bad habits in the schoolroom he admon dished dished t the he teachers to form habits of punctuality persistence and right habits of study in the children he inveighed inveigh ed against the habits of explaining pla ining too much in a lesson making it too simple so that the process of thinking chinkin g among the pupils is unnecessary he pointed out some of the bad habits which teachers form in presenting 9 t the he lesson to the child and especially fly directed attention to the idea that repetition does not always de elope right habits A piano duett romeo and juliette overture was rendered by mattie nielson and ired Field fieldsted ste ind acl it t vas nigoro j pi afir I 1 e splendid rendition superintendent nelson gave one of the best addresses ever listened to in this section of the country on lincoln he has a conversational style in talking to the teachers b it it is none the less effective and ills his masterly account of the life work of this great statesman was most pleasing he recounted incidents in the life work nork of lincoln and told with graphic effect of the crucial moments in the great struggle for freedom which lincoln conducted he recited the Alar Afar tirs fa favorite poem 0 why should the spirit of mortal he be irjud and also the famous gettysburg address altogether the address of the superintendent vas nas one of the geras gems of the entire institute and the teachers were carried away with the subject so ao ably abl handled to close the program mattie nielsen played a piano solo webers in vi to the dance which was well received FRIDAY AFTERNOON the session opened with a contralto sol solo last night by miss misa jessie crawford of manti her voice is sweet and her annunciation clear so well did she render this number that she was recalled and rendered mizpah in a pleasing manner after prayer by president mrs lulu peterson sang for all eternity with flute mrs peterson has an excellent voice and gave a very pleasing rendition of this magnificent gone and for a recall she gave every day is sunshine when the heart beats true superintendent nelson was the first speaker he said that he had been asked abbed to speak upon how a lady should train her husband he thought that he should conte content it himself with two or three observations on this point the first was the admonition that ladies should exercise the same care in the destruction of tradition he outlined some of the traditional theories indulged in by the ancients and the destruction of these theories by the rasim of succeeding benti gen ra eions this modernism had decided that the theory of evolution stands sponsor for too mich MI ch so too there is a milder modernism nisin in education the old theories eq of methodizing method izing are abandoned abondo ned an and d teachers are now taught to deal with the boy he called attention to the fact that there is 13 a bill before the legislature which pron vides that no person will be ele cle eible gible for a teachers certificate until a tour four years high school course has been passed he also explained that provisions provia ions are being made that local high schools will be enabled to give the necessary fourbears four years course mr nelson then took up U p the v view i I 1 ew that this modernizing modernising modern ising is i s becoming ex in its effects the educational system is such that the bright boy or girl the genius of any locality is retarded the slower boy and girl of the class the modern education has formed a class lock step which makes all members of the class step alike and retards regards genius this mut must be remedied ardathe boy or girl of genius must be permitted to live their ines ies according to their abilities character must be made paramount in the education no teacher can give that which he or she does not possess the modern teacher must have character and that must be stamped upon the boys and girls of the present age treating national ideality he be referred to the teachers duty in high Anic ideals if in any of the Eur orean countries it is the duty of the teacher to dev develop elope that nation s highest ideals but in abercia where all these nationalities are combined it is the Amer american lLan ideal that must be created in the minds of the children in america without regard to their nationality supt bupt nelson made much of the necessity of a good working knowledge of the english language chis i la another m modern demand upon tech er ers eath each day should see the teacher better acquainted with his native tangue not grammatical expression alone but the power of language should be ti tic the c object making language true to the conception of the teacher language of the teacher in expression is the best cheap cheal amusement which tend to cheapen and degrade the teacher lie he impressed this idea that what one may say derogatory to another may not hurt the person but it makes the infinitely smaller MORNING the attendance at this session was much smaller than at the ot other her sessions superintendent P D je jensen risen was unable to be present and the exercises were conducted by superintendent miner of sanpete San pete the first thing done was to ask the teachers to get together on the front seats instead of being scattered ovi ov r the entire floor at the r request of prof stewart this session opened with singing by the audience the song we are sowing dally daily gowing was rendered and prayer was offered by prof jensen of the richfield kigh high school following this J M peterson rendered a bass solo down in the d deep eap which was nicely bung and ampre appreciated at e prof hall was introduced as the first speaker he continued his talk of the previous day on the cultivation of habits he made a strong plea for punctuality in opening ile he then their launched bunched forth on the habit of cheerfulness in the schoolroom the teacher who acquired red the scolding habit is pretty much of a failure while the I 1 teacher with a cheerful smile and a cheerful he erful countenance nten ance has haa the greatest me measure acure of he followed lines of habit which he had observed and pointed out many things which the teacher should avoid in in the schoolroom chool room prof halls address ws was most practical and the points were well delivered miss nielsen of mt M t pleasant rendered a pretty short piano selection and waa encored she responded with another dainty number prof stewart was then introduced he read from an educational pamphlet and took for his subject the following ille business of the school is to create the need for knowledge know ledge and to bend the activities ot of the child toward that need he drew on his experience in the profession for incidents and examples for illustrating and explaining his conception of the subject his address was listened to with interest and attention although the speaker er fave one the in of having depended deo ended upon the occasion for his inspiration rather than a thorough preparation of so important a groundwork subject miss juanita nielsen was announced for a and shebang she ang yesterday charmingly and received hearty applause SATURDAY AFTERNOON the attendance was still a disappointment at the afternoon session the first number rendered was a soprano solo by miss clara hall who sang A memories lemories of home and for a recall sang the dying flower prayer was offered by 0 A andelin A clarinet duett swiss boy air and variations by frank callaway and ernest with orchestral accompaniment was one of the pleasing phrasing features of the afternoon session the clarinets sung sune with excellent blending and well nell nigh faultless technique the perdition nas well receded and for an encore the orchestra placed a dainty number first heart throbs the richfield male quartette scored cored a hit with legends and barbard Lar bard watch both numbers were excellently rendered in blending and tono tone prof hall resumed his discussion and prefaced his with aith a mead of praise to the singers and musicians who had bad taken part in the institute and stated that in no other teachers institute in the state were such excellent musical numbers rendered as those rendered here and urged the people of this section to try and appreciate the jaent dispi displayed aled he gave an excellent summing up of habits habit to le be cultivated and those to be avoided in the school room ills his work during the tha institute was excellent and appreciated by tha th teachers miss clark miss aliss crawford awford Ci and fred fjeldsted sang annie laurie laune as a trio very sweetly and for a recall rendered render td cd good the voices were w ere beautiful and the blending and balance were appreciated by the audience prof stewart took up the subject of opportunities and drew some valuable pictures for the teachers he especially urged cheerfulness in the schoolroom as one of the aids aid in ass assisting sting the pupils in any subject he pointed out many ot or the things winch occur in school life which are great opportunities for illustrating a principle if properly grasped he quoted incidents showing that very often through a mistaken idea of discipline the teacher has missed an opportunity for good where the same fault or failing or apparent disregard for discipline line in tile the pupil mig t have been m ide a great opportunity by proper methods of treatment prof stewart is pl pleasing eising in in his address as he fairy rac kachites hites sun I 1 shine and
