Show TAKE CARE OF FRUIT TREES TREE S inspector In specter nazer gives advice san jose scale wooly apis and slugs infest orchards of this county remedies for same monroe sept 1 1903 editor reaper I 1 would like to give gine your readers a few items on oil the care of fruit ind fruit trees As the time for the county fail is apo approaching roach it may not be amiss to say that the fruit exhibit should be as clein as possible diseased Disei Di seved sed fruit should be barred from tho exhibit and to do this a competent judge should pias on the fisit which is ordered for exhibition there is considerable san jose scale on the fruit trees of this county and trees affected with this disease ea e will likely produce fruit by which the disease will be spread this disease is 13 responsible for the old and dead appearance of many of the trees in the county another disease which is working corking ha havoc voc among the trees is the wooly aois this will the trees by damaging the roots and the fruit will be effected the remedy for this is kerosene kt rosene emulsion which is easily handled and does not cost much san jose scale is harder to kill than the other disease as it takes lime and sulphur but this solution will also kill red spider which is another form of disease which is annoying it is said that a double strength solution of kerosene emulsion will kill the scale if applied in the early stages the slugs on pear and cherry trees is 13 another disease which is in this and it should be attended to it is found on the leaves of the trees in appearance it is like a small fl hit flit it worm with a large head and the body slimy the second brood of these is now affecting the trees A solution of parts pans green one pound to gallons of water ater will destroy these pests many of the tres in the county are affected with one or more of thee ds diseases eases and t the lie matt matter e r should rec ne ie the it of the ot oti ir i r I 1 wise there will N ill be little to dic display play 1 ID the line of fruit dt at this or succeeding furs 1 1 ah to call the attention atter tion of the fuit men of this county to the jonathan apple from experience this apple has proven to be the one best adapted for this thib county it is not so deflected by frost and on account of f the tough twigs on which I 1 h the fruit forms which bend in the wind the fruit does not become dis lodged I 1 would like to meet all the deputy fisit tice inspectors during the fair and I 1 want A ant to urge them to see to it thit each loe locality alty is represented with a display of some kind the exhibit this year will necessarily necess be lut if followed up it will nill result in gord to the fruit glowers I 1 will be pres ent and will di tribute copies of the law relating to the care of fruit trees EDWARD NAZER cou county nty horticultural inspector |
