Show WHY THIS perturbation j there his bis been much perturbation among politicians and near politicians in this vicinity the week or more the reaper has been maligned and it has gone even eien to the point that these men iho are active in politics carry the fight into their social relationship and the editor is treated as though he had committed some great wrong the facts are arc that this cit and county has never before seen a campaign where a local paper has h id the courage to print political news these things that are being said now were said before in every campaign for years but because of threatened withdrawal of patronage or business the local ibcal papers have bane been gagged the idea has gained circulation from the utterances of men active in the political field thit this paper is anti republican we challenge anyone of them to produce one single utterance of this paper that by any means can be colstrud con strud into an attack on the republican can party or a republican nolice the editorial utterances of this paper have been devoid of political a significance we have published a political column purporting to give the news and the espres econs of members of the dominant party in this county counts and for that we are to be ostracised ostracized we defy any of the offended politicians to show one charge of incompetence made by this paper we care not one straw who get the ices and our only intention has been to present the expressions of the r rank ank and file of the party in a way such as they pre dented to the politicians of the canty in any other campaign there have been grow growl lings ings and grumbl ings falm members of the dominant domin int political party that therann the rank and file are given no voice in the presentation sen tation of men for office there lia hae e been mutterings rings against third term aspirants there hae bane been charges oi of clique domination and we ve have banc given car to these thee murmur murmurings ings and because it hurts some of the leading politicians to hear bear these things the reaper must bu be i hipped into line inc by threatened boycott or refusal to give it any busin business esq patronage patr anage As to patronage from some of these men ve have but to point to tle fate of the richfield sur as a sample of what the politicians and office holders will do for the local paper that supports them the editor of oc the sun was urged to come to richfield and become the dominant martys organ ile he came ile he worked loyally for the party and the man to whom was given the awarding of patronage turned him md and his paper down hard true he received some support some of the politicians were loyal to him the district judge and the treasurer were true to him some soma of the other county officials gave him part of their work but when the last city election was on the reaper which at that time was fighting the republican candidate and fighting figh tine him hard the raper being controlled by mr hanway was awarded three times as much campaign work as was the republican organ these are facts as to patron aee and business which these county officials distributed to the county republican organ what then has the reaper to lose in this fight true we ve have gained the enmity of a few but we cant help but think that they are thin skinned and if they cant stand to hear bear the things which members of their party are saying of them they have no business to monkey with pol lites we here and now enter a positive dental denial to the insinuation that the re iper has attacked any candidate either cither as to his personal qualifications or any other oter way we have said and we repeat that the present county officers are arc honest and efficient what more do they want must we suppress the utterances of the party members from our political news column because these men are ar e all honest and competent competente 7 because they are arc honest does it follow tint thit there are arc no other men in their the only time tim e the reaper has mentioned county officials was when we made a plea pica that the county busi business noss be given the business men in this county we contend that the office for the county officers should bo be binen to business houses Is this an uncommon demand demanda it a fact thit the republican party has been the party to demand protection protect iun for home institutions 7 it ha advocated that the honic home merchants and minu facture rs be given the preference if that is good policy why do not these men who are placed in office by republican votes live up to the pary claims and give their home merchants and business houses the preference in 11 the he expenditure of county moneys money if that hat policy of protection is good for the nation it is goodford good for the county and it is good for the city we have urged that policy and we will continue to urge it whether the men holding office v ho have repeatedly ordered their supplies from salt lake city and ignored tho the business men who contribute the money in taxes to pay county salaries lakeit or not again the reaper is attacked because of the IIri writings tings of one ebenezer we haunt at any time endorsed one word uttered by that gentleman and from his writings we suspect that he be is perfectly able to defend himself and these columns are open to any of the offended ones to answer mawer ebenezer and as long ion 9 as is the matter is not li bellous we will cheerfully heer fully publish any reply |
