Show A ROAR FROM EBENEZER says something about county politics politics thinks politicians are trying to reverse order of employer and employee monroe aug 2 1908 editor ri rohneld afield reaper since political weeds haie hae begun to take root all oer tho the county I 1 thought a bev few remarks from ebenezer would not be out of place of course we nc all know the understanding understand mc has gone forth that it is none of the common rabbles babbles rab bles put in when iben things political are being cons dered but that is only another of the bal baj smelling melling weeds that grow groi in the political garden just the same along about Noi november ember it looks good to see the rabble march up in single file as thea the pass pas under the sign I 1 pay taxes here it is that that makes it possible sible for the politician to draw his living ebenezer object to pacing taxes neither does he object to the salary he does object to the understanding that all office holders by right of inherst shall hae two consecutive terms and now present incumbents would extend the law of inherit inheritance ence even unto the third term and by that time on doubt the law of limitation would take effect and the office be theirs by law forever now mr editor these offices both state and county are remunerative they pay the incumbents more than they can possibly make outside the office and ebenezer thinks they ought to be distributed a little oftener and let more people get the benefit the public pays these salaries the public is the amplo employer cr the offie holder the employee but because of these sala jl ie th poll iciano have sought to reverse tins this arder of things thing and make the public the employee and the office holder bolder the employer the public the dairy hard I 1 and the politician ean ican the dairyman Now nowadays adaSs when ahen the public puts a man in office he immediately becomes like Sin old man alan of the moun j tain he climbs up on the shoulders shoulder of his benefactor and there he sits and wont be shaken off no matter how bow badly the people may mav want to chan change chane e their burden their tormentor has become master of the situation and contentedly sits in the saddle and draws his hia living from the horse he is riding it has become so that it seems seem almost impossible to elect a school trustee without having to keep him there for the rest of his natural life monroe sometime ago had a couple of school trustees that served nearly twenty years each time and again the people tried to shake them off and not till old age stepped in and took a hand did the people finally get rid of them no doubt the same conditions condition exist east no now or has e isted in other towns there are people in sevier county who hive have been drawing their living for years and years from the public treasury rv almost every day since them the began in business they have held down a fat office many times have other men just lis as able and qualified tried to pry some of these fellows loose but failed and failed miserably just because the machinery which elects officers is under the full control of the man in office very little or no notice at all 13 given for a primary then the min man in office gets out his v wife ife hii friends and their wives ives come out the primary ih ib packed and the olti e man has another two or four years term it is said that just such a primary was held in eld recently in order to save the neck of a prominent office holder it is said that at that primary which was held but a few hours after the official notice wis was up one office holder bolder whose salary ib a lear brought his wife and sister another getting 1600 a year had hib bib wife another whose salary is ISOO 1800 a year brought his big wife another drawing a salary larger than any of them had his wife bif 0 and daughter on hand so as ah to make the votes count and hence the gentleman has the nomination for another four bears ears As a rule a politician bring his wife 0 it to a primary till he thinks the public his employ er is tired d of mm him the young youn republicans in this county are beginning to see the only ounce for them to ever get some of the fruit from the political tree is to vote the democratic ticket and kick hick the whole bunch out from the cumor afloat it iq 11 understood hit the county clerk the sheriff and the reorder ader ill all hent a third term for I 1 four 0 u years they hive have hold held an office gien to them their by their frends and during that time they hake haie mide more money that thea the could pos possibly bibly hane hae dine outside the office it be more becoming for them to na now gie their fi lends a chance to pay off i a mortgage mortas e or to and get can ith the mere chere is also a bunch of commissioners commissioner who want to succeed them ehe Is it po foible ible there ire no more people in seier county with bains b ains enough to fill ani an of these offices 7 or do these incumbents need a third teim to cover un UD com something oms thing ething done duding the list two MO terms term one term is enouch for mot most people to io terms is enough for an anybody body and three ahree terms is too much for anybody ind and ought to be to toa much for every body it looks look bid bad it feels bad ind and it is bid bad it his has a tendency to create a spirit of graft and dishonesty that bodes no good to the people who stand it ind for it EBENEZER |
