Show local F F AO wills hollors at stock show melvin almans thalmann Th entry wins grand championship others rate high the ric richfield afield high school chapter of future farmers of america won more than a fair share of honors at the annual livestock show held last week in ogden taking two first prizes out of a dossi possible throe three and one second prize prize in in the beef cattle division due to an error it was not announced in the state papers collectively the boys received nearly 1000 from sale of their animals and receipt of small cash prizes with his white faced hereford curly melvin thalman ot vermilion won the grand championship of the beef cattle division and received also the award for first place in the light weight class the animal was one of the attractions of the show and rated the best from utah stock this was particularly ticul arly interesting because of the humble bumble beginning its dam was a poor heifer and the owner dr L A poulson gave the call calf to lee brown of richfield who turned it over to a cow he like to milk melvin later bought it for 30 and with industrious attention during days built it into a prize winning animal weighing around pounds the original owner dr poulson was elated over the success won by young thalman with prize money of 5 and sale of the steer melvin alalvin received rules made it mandatory that the champion be sold at the show with a pound hereford steer nelo dastrup of sigurd won fuse place in the middle weight class tor lor beef cattle the animal sold for to a buyer from emery county who will enter it as part ot a carload at san francisco he received and for two bulls entered in the show as well as 5 in prize money during the past four years a member of the dastrup family has won prizes at the ogden show nelos brother arnel preceding him in winning honors this is the last year the family will be represented presented le in the F P F A division they have one of the best records at the show with a grand championship and at least two fust first prizes to their credit A hereford aberdeen angus cross entered in the beef cattle division by alden fillmore of richfield won second place in the heavy weight class and with p ps ize money brought alden dereece dastrup sold a steer for in the showmanship contest melvin thalman placed second anu ana alden fillmore thud third chase wilson won sixth place with a pen of three lambs which he sold at a profit A team composed of val cowley vern cowley R J rickenbach chad peterson and heber hall entered the ringside ring side judging contest but their rating has not been announced declared to have the largest concentration of choice beef animals in the world the show this year had entries from 21 states and canada the local F F A chapter is planning to enter the junior stock show in salt lake next june with the finest exhibition e of calves lambs and swine the chapter has ever e assembled essem ss ambled bled and it is possible that a couple of entries will be sent to the san francisco show tile the boys were accompanied to ogden by their chapter adviser and instructor don E kenney and melvin roper also of the school faculty parents of some of the boys and a number of other sevier county people attended the show among them mr air and mrs horace dastrup of sigurd virge thalman of vermilion mr air and mrs I 1 A cowley and L W gardner of venice mr and mrs 1111 millan an gledhill mr air and mrs airs leo thalman and mr and mrs john jorgenson of sigurd george rudolph and rodney rickenbach of glenwood lew mar price E H street bill street dr L aboul A poulson dr F N bert poulson C 0 and owen fillmore Fill of richfield eller eiler H B crandall and mor roll robbins of salina angus newba and aaron parsons of monroe john A parker and mr and mrs H G morroy of joseph superintendent erin dow brian and the wane high ag teacher mr dal aey alao were there and depre tentative G A staples of central it tended with a group of legislators |
