| Show utah farm cooperatives increase farm credit administration completes exhaustive survey more than tripling over a ten year period the cooperative marketing of farm products and the purchasing of f farm a r rn supplies through has become a business in utah in another and older field of cooperation aaion the irrigation of farmlands by mutual water companies utah leads the nation in the number of companies operating and in total memberships in these mutu als these salient facts are derived from figures compiled by the farm credit administration in an exhaustive hau stive survey of farm cooperation in utah conducted by the berkeley california bank for cooperatives an unit and utah state agricultural college at logon logan the utah survey was part of a nationwide study made to determine the growth and extent of farmers participation in cp operative enterprise in the united states poultry products eggs in particular rank first among cooperatively marketed commodities the survey field fieldien men found in 1936 the last full year studied by the survey a poultry business represented 44 per cent of all cooperative selling done in the state of this was accounted co anted for by the eggs that went to market cooperatively only two other states in the nation reported a greater volume of coop co op eggs than did utah where the greater portion of the production was marketed by the utah poultry cooperatives of salt lake city most of this associations output is sold on the new york market utah is I 1 s the leading state in coop au p turkey production in 1 1936 prod u cers c e r s cooperatively marketed turkeys worth more than a volume well ahead of colorado california and oregon the other leading turkey states livestock is important in the cooperative picture cattle sheep hogs bogs and calves valued at 2274 were shipped by local stock associations during the survey year ten sugar beet associations organized baniz d to bargain for the prices to be paid members by sugar factories sold beets worth representing more than half of the states total income for this commodity three other phases of farmer cooperation reported business forthe for the year topping the million dollar mark dairies did a co operative oera tive business fruit and vegetable coops co ops aggregated and wool worth was cooperatively marketed the purchasing of feeds accounted for 93 per cent of cooperative purchasing business which in 1936 to as contrasted with an estimated business ten years earlier e ar the oldest of cooperatives was found to be but 30 years old the greatest growth in farm coop cooperation aeration in the deseret state having occurred since 1930 memberships ber ships in 70 marketing and purchasing associations total nearly providing a valued service the mutual M irrigation companies of utah numbering with memberships membership s mccu occupy p y a dominant position in the states agriculture utah has the oldest cooperative water companies in the united states the earliest ones being formed in the days of mormon settlement tl they are reliably estimated to comprise well over 90 per cent of the states irrigation enterprises and account for more than 80 per cent of the irrigated territory in 1936 their net worth was just under for the most part these companies are small their memberships averaging 88 |
