Show i scoutmaster writes of jamboree by REED OGDEN the first national jamboree was the outgrowth ou of twenty years of scouting in america over a million men and boys are n now ow playing the great game of scouting this millon milion is almost half of the scouts that constitute the world brotherhood which extends into almost every civilized country there were at the national jamboree over scouts representing almost every city and town in the U S and from every kind of home even then this was only one out of every forty in the organization but that one will take back to the others a feeling of brotherhood and patriotism that will do much to better scouting it is hard for me to state in such few words the wonderful things that transpired in the ten days at washington from the time the opening salute was fired and the flags of alf fifty ty two nations were raised at headquarters until the fire of friendship died away and the last taps were sounded the program was filled with thrill after thrill nearly every night in the shadow of washington monument scouts would gather at the arena some to present pageants demonstrations in and others to be thrilled with the activities tivi ties of the great scout movement on two evenings there were mass gatherings at which over 26 scouts took part the first was the opening camp fire at which time the fire of friends ship was lighted by uncle dan beard national scout commissioner the logs for this fire were brought from every corner of the nation and the fire was kept burning unil til after the closing cerecies cere mies the 1 ast bast night at this meeting lord sadan powells message was read and his wishes to all present including the scouts from 24 other nations was to see each other as we are alike and develop our com rade ship on thise points which interest both I 1 can truly say that the spirit of brotherhood prevailed through the whole camp other messages were delivered by president walter W head president of the boy scouts of america A james E west camp ch chief I 1 ef and the nesi presidents dents message by attorney general homer S cummings campfire stories were told by col theodore roosevelt tho second gathering was the the grand ga and national convocation on sunday evening july fourth never before has there been such a gathering za the obligations af pf f scouting to reli religion zion was the theme at that gathering the four major religious faiths were represented each paid tribute to scouting the music was furnished by the marine band with solos by lanny ross pres heads impressive thought was that god gd G d did establish scouting in to be a bulwark to the nation and society in these troublesome davs he said we have a debt to religion on and it t is our obligation to keen faithful to our church As the first national jamboree came to a dose close and the scouts to the four corners comers of the world they took home a greater love one for another and a deter min i rati to live ind and help others to live the scout oath and laws I 1 ean can truly say as did president ent franklin D roosevelt Roo the racketeer and gangster go 0 o out of th window when scouting comes in the door |
