Show MS r i KB TO INSIST ONS I 1 TAGGED state department of ture seeks protection of farmers gardners gardeners Gard ners A vigorous campaign is now nowa being carried on by the state board of agriculture to protect the farmers and gardners gardeners gard ners of utah from the menace of weed seeds and low quality field and garden seeds most of the farms and gardens are now infested to some extent with weeds of various kinds one of the chief sources from which new infestations take place is weed seed in the field and garden seeds we plant in order to protect farmers and gardners gardeners gard ners the state law lat provides that every lot of agricultural or vegetable seeds shall be labeled to show name of seed approximate percentage by weight of purity approximate percentage by weight of weed seed the name and approximate number per pound of noxious weed seed the app roxi mate percentage of of germination of seed together with month and year of test the county or state of origin of all imported seed and the full name and address of the vender of such seed the state board of agriculture is authorized by law to make tests of seeds offered for sale and to take necessary steps to protect farmers and gardeners from seeds of low quality or that contain weed seed farmers are urged to be cautious in purchasing seeds to be sure gure that they carry a tag showing that they have been tested and are of high standard there are some itinerant peddlers offering alfalfa seed screen ings of low quality and not properly tagged to the farmers of southern utah the law requires all such seed to be labeled correctly and any seed being offered for sale without this label or tag is in violation of the law in order to carry out this work and the enforcement of other laws pertaining to agriculture the state board of agriculture has a number of inspectors in different parts of the state the inspector for sevier sanpete San Sati pete piute diute garfield and wayne counties is H W gore who is located in richfield at the present time he is checking on I 1 the seeds that are being offered to farmers and gardeners of this district the state board of agriculture also maintains a seed analyst V R in the state capitol building who is prepared to make seed tests at any time for farmers growers buyers or dealers farmers cannot be too cautious in insisting on seed they purchase carrying the official labels as a recent inspection disclosed that certain alfalfa seed being sold without inspection contained a comparatively high percentage of white top or anderton weed seed |
