Show WERE ALWAYS TO BLAME it is always popular and never out of fashion in europe to blame on to uncle sam everything which goes wrong in the world although we did not start the world war we were blamed by the allies for not getting in and when we did get in and saved the day for them we were blamed for not coming to the rescue sooner in a war which we had nothing to do with bringing on then in spite of the fact that we demanded no territory or other spoils of war we were blamed for ausking tusking repayment of the money we loaned to europe wh when en wo we cancelled part of the debt and tried to collect the rest uncle sam was characterized as the worlds greatest shylock in spite of the fact that we were old it was a war to bring universal brotherhood and to end all wars there has been little brotherhood and less peace in europe since the treaty of versailles was waa signed the armaments are greater than before and the international hat reds more bitter now we find that even that is the fault of uncle sam we have it on the authority of two of the most distinguished of our british cousins stanley baldwin the political big shot and harold author and diplomat these two distinguished cousins have told us in recent speeches that the present plight in europe is the fault of uncle sam and all came about because we sign the versailles treaty and join the league of nations having been trimmed out of our loans insulted and lampooned during the past ten years by european bunco bunca artists most americans think that the main things we have left to be thankful for are that we sign the versailles treaty and were intelligent enough to keep out of the league of nations senator borah in characteristic fashion paid his respects to these distinguished european statesmen who blame us for all Eu ropes ills the other day when he be said in a speech in the senate they are in plain terms a perversion of historic facts and notwithstanding the high source from which they now come they are an ungracious libel upon a nation whose brave sons helped to keep the english channel from becoming a german lake it is not in harmony with english traditions and presents abath a rather spectacle to see british statesmen searching about for some one upon whom to place the blame for their own policies no ratification of the versailles treaty by the united states could have stayed the devastating demoralizing disintegrating effects of its terms upon the political and economic life of europe when finished it was the embodiment of the spirit of vengeance and of spoils it sacrificed the peace and recovery of europe to the imperialistic ambitions of a few victor nations an am american president sought in vain to assuage its vindictive terms and to mollify its predatory effects he entertained the hope no doubt that the league would ameliorate its terms others differently but had the treaty stood alone it is safe to say that it would would never have received his signature it was waa contrary to his whole theory of adjustment and peace that which has brought turmoil and unrest economic chaos and widespread human suffering were the terms and conditions of the treaty and no one had more to do with malting making its terms and no one received greater material benefits from I 1 its ts brov provisions is ions th than an th the e nation which now denounces the united states as a scapegoat the united states received nothing asked nothing and displayed both wisdom and humanity when she rejected its obligations it is perhaps not surprising when men look about them and see sec misery and wretchedness on every hand the fruits of their own acts and policies that seeing these things they should seek out some nation upon which to place the blame it la Is not strange eimer perhaps when we analyze the motives of men engaged in such a desperate enterprise that they should turn upon the nation to whom they owe the greatest debt of gratitude it would seem that here are arc some logical and timely words in these hectic days america remembering mem bering its ita past experiences can well afford to let europe stew in its own juice at all odds anything we might do to help would never be appreciated |
