emergency drouth cattle program in sevier and wayne counties is practically completed and actual work on the measure is being started this week professor william ag G peterson director of the program forthe state of utah discussed with state officials members of the federal livestock loan organization and representatives of the FERA at a meeting in salt lake friday the plans for slaughtering utah cattle as a drouth emergency measure 1 professor peterson will be assisted in the work by county agents as directors in the various counties an assistant director in each county to be appointed by the adjustment administration at washington an inspector and a representative of lien holders S R boswell county agent of sevier county has beert been appointed director for sevier and wayne counties professor peterson has recommended to 1 the ahe administration the appointment of J r pr ogden of richfield as assistant for sevier county and owen M davis of loa assistant for wayne coun ty dr J I 1 curtis of richfield has received his appointment as inspector bureau of animal husbandry and H F gunn as rep tentative senta tive of the lien Ilen holders all local officers attended a meeting in salt lake tuesday for the purpose of receiving instructions there will also be a county executive committee of three members two of whom will be appointed by the utah cattle and horse growers association officers and one of whom will be a member of the sevier county Dairy mens association this executive committee will have charge of the campaign in the county and will appoint appraisers as needed A meeting was held tuesday night in salt lake with J mcfarlane and wm peterson Rc terson to appoint the committee and names will be announced within a few days A mailing list of all cattle owners in sevier and wayne counties is being compiled and cards calling for the number and description of cattle for sale under the emergency pro program giam and the name and address of any lienholder lien hen holder as well as that of the producer will be mailed to the cattlemen who in turn are arc requested to return them promptly to the office of county agent S R boswell these survey blanks will be summarized in the county agents office and after necessary inspections appraisals tagging and official agreements are completed and upon order from a director cattle will be turned over to the FERA each week to be disposed of through the proper channels tt A standard price schedule for the state has been worked out for cattle over two years of age the benefit payment for taking such cattle out paid as a sales price making the total payment from 12 to 20 per head for cattle one to two years old the benefit payment will be 5 and the sales price from 5 to 10 for cattle under one year the benefit payment will tie be 3 and the sales price from 1 to 5 the mooting in salt lake tuesday was addressed by harry petri assistant chief S bureau of animal husbandry who said the government had been working on the program two weeks in minnesota the dakotas and wisconsin and up to date had purchased head of cattle in those areas of the cattle purchased were condemned as being and were slaughtered and buried on the ranches head were purchased as cows for relief families in the southern states he explained that the program calls for the elimination of inferior animals livestock men are urged to keep their best cattle for foundation stock ile he also announced that the government is working out a plan to loan money on the cattle saved to help farmers preserve them for the future governor henry H blood spoke in support of the plan and expressed appreciation in the fact that utah would be able to participate in it dr 0 S fish of washington outlined the price to be paid E J maynard then outlined the methods of putting the program in into to effect robert H hinckley FERA director in charge of the removal of cattle in utah stated that it is probable that head of cattle will be processed in the utah canning plants each week he also reported that each county relief office will have the privilege of organizing meat canning centers whereby some meat can be canned and distributed to people on relief rolls those on relief rolls will be given an opportunity to work out their budgets he also stated that about 8 per cent of the cattle purchased will e cows cowa for weeks shows that in the neighborhood of ISO to cows will have to be removed from farms and ranches in utah within the next three months he reported that the usual hay crop in normal umea times is 1350 GOO tons and that the outlook for the crop this year is tons every livestock man should make an effort he stated to balance his livestock with his bis feed for the coming winter incidentally he stated that there are many productive nonproductive non horses in utah that should be put on the same road he called attention to the fact that there will be no free feed for cattle but that government feed loans will be available to feed the cattle saved the agricultural adjustment administration Is working on a plan and will set up an organization to pool orders for feed to eliminate the speculators
