Show VOTER T BEETS IS now SUIED 46 deal closed for purchase of piute diute reservoir supply throughout sevier county farmers who a few weeks ago were preparing to plow up their beets in disgust are now back in their fields with songs in their hearts assured of sufficient water to mature the present crop of sugar beets growers have resumed ed thinning and cultivation with every promise of a splendid harvest at good prices during the week negotiations between representatives of the growers and millard county water owners were successfully con surna su mated ted making it possible for the beet growers of this valley to secure secure acre feet of water from the plute reservoir the governors drouth committee had previously allocated towards the purchase of the water to which the beet growers agreed to add approximately but legal complications delayed final closing of the deal the matter however is no r definitely settled and all reason for anxiety removed much credit for their untiring efforts is due the associated civic clubs under the leadership of president frank G martines zan dan peterson chairman of the beet growers association county commissioner G A staples G W blomquist president of the richfield irrigation canal company james P poulson president of the sevier valley canal company officials of the gunnison sugar company and other county and civic leaders but for the sacrifice of time and expense devoted by some of these men it is unlikely that financial assistance would have been received ar or that the conflicting interests included in the deal could have been reconciled it is of course unfortunate that similar relief could not have been secured for alfalfa grain and other crops but the water is being diverted from the alfalfa fields of millard county to the beet fields of sevier county on the grounds that the beet crop is more valuable than millards dillards Mil lards third crop of alfalfa and that the limited water should be used where it will yield the most it is improbable that water from plute reservoir could have been secured on any other basis |
