Show PHELON WINS OFF CONTEST will enter national contest in line with his brother raymonds record paralleling to date the record set last year by his brother raymond phelon malouf won tiie the regional future farmers of america oratory contest in salt lake tuesday by defeating contestants representing eleven western states in consequence of his bis achievement he will enter the national contest to be held next october in kansas city in connection with the kansas city livestock show phelon lon a student of the richfield high school is a son of mr and mrs N 11 malouf of glenwood while the richfield chapter and the region in general were proud of the fact that raymond placed in the national contest last year they are enthusiastic in their hopes that phelon will in this case excel the record set by his brother and bring first place honors home to the western states phelonas Phe lons subject was the farmers part in a planned agriculture and was presented as a feature of the regional confere ence of supervisors and teacher trainers rs in vocational subjects held in salt lake an audience of several thousand heard the contests second place was won by ernest hamilton of chehalis Che halic washington while ronald W pierce of twin falls idaho and chester A rogers of shell montana were tied for third place phelon reached the regional contest through a series of elimination events winning first in the richfield chapter F F A then in the southern utah district and later in the state contest where he defeated six other district winners for the third time this will bring honors for participation in national events to the richfield chapter F F A scott hawley of central having represented the chapter at the national convention as a regional delegate and later having been made a national vice president while he attended the R H S back of the unusual record achieved by these students and to a great extent responsible for the opportunities afforded them has been the enthusiasm built in the local chapter by john R adams since he became smith hughes instructor tor at the R H S a few years ago and organized the chapter it has been suggested locally that some form of entertainment be given as a testimonial to phelon and also to aid in financing his trip to the national convention a suggestion which thi h ef reaper reaped heartily endorses |
