Show prohibition IS DOOMED the eighteenth amendment was one of the greatest mistakes ever committed by a government body of the united states declared united states senator elbert D thomas from utah at a meeting held in ogden monday evening senator thomas characterized tills this prohibition legislation as the greatest hypocrisy and stated that it was not passed by congress but by one of the greatest lobbies ever assembled in washington national prohibition is really a dead issue and has been so for two years or more lacking only the technical vote of 36 states for repeal thirty three states have hav e already voted on this issue and per cent of them have voted overwhelmingly in favor of doing away with a farcical attempt to deprive tho the people of personal persona liberty which our constitution invests in them the eighteenth amendment has haa abjectly failed to prohibit the drinking of liquor but on the other hand has caused poisonous bootleg stuff to come into homes where any sort of liquor never before was known drinking has become the smart thing with 1 aomen boys and girls who before knew its taste illicit traffie traffic in vicious alcoholic concoctions concoct ions at prices has ed cd a handsome revenue for racketeers and gangsters to carry on their nefarious work of which kidnapping has been outstanding personally we would prefer that the american people should get along entirely without alcoholic beverages but a thorough and expensive attempt to prohibit this personal privilege over a 15 year period has resulted in what any fair minded person must admit to be a miserable failure our state and national government has been deprived of a huge revenue from licenses and in addition has been put to tremendous expense in trying to enforce an objectionable law which has resulted in the corruption of public officials and political intrigue which threatens to undermine our government our own state has one of the most stringent liquor laws of any in the union but anyone who says that drinking is not prevalent in utah I 1 is either kidding himself or has been cloistered in such a manner that he is not acquainted with what his neighbors are doing there is not a particle of doubt but that the nation will vote for repeal and if utah should be the one state that refuses to join the ranks of the majorey and retains its own prohibition laws we will be the mecca for bootleggers which will even outdo present deplorable plo rable conditions and put the state to a huge expense to gryto enforce laws which have already proved to be not enforceable hard liquor will pour into this state from surrounding wet territory just as beer is now flowing into utah almost unrestrained beer I 1 in bottles or on draught of the 32 variety is now obain obtainable able in almost any town in this state and yet we are arc deprived of a very substantial revenue from this source which would tend greatly to relieve our burden of over taxation for government purposes public works and the relief of the destitute our president and the whole administration has declared itself unequivocally in favor of the repeal of prohibition laws and it 1 is 9 to be hoped that utah will fall in line with the program for national economic recovery and sane legislation |
