| Show EDUCATION WEEK BEING IN L what the schools are arc helping to achieve is theme 0 of f the week the eleventh annual american education week is now being observed throng throughout hout the united states the first american education week was observed in 1921 the idea of a nationwide nation wide observance of a program planned to interpret the nee needs ds aims and achievements of the schools to the american public grew out of a series of conferences conference 13 which began in 1919 between the americanism commission of the american legion and officers and committees of the national education association the observance of american education week luring during which the attention of the anthe nation is focused upon education is important and appropriate the schools are close to tile the hearts of the people they have grown up out of the soil of individual need and community aspiration they are the one great folk institution developed in Ame america our people have great faith in education and that faith has been justified in terms of individual achievement and national advance individual schools may have been weak and individual pupils may have failed to make the best use of their opportunities but for america as a whole the common school has led the way toward a richer life for the individual towards a worthier citizenship and a finer national culture by putting the school and the child first we shall build up the physical vigor the intellectual stamina the skill and the moral fiber which are the real functions of both individual and national greatness the theme of the eleventh annual american education week is what the schools are helping america to achieve sponsored by the national education association the united states office of education and the american legion the week is being observed november 9 15 the topics selected by the sponsors for the day by lay day observance are as follows monday november 9 what the are helping america to achieve in economic progress tuesday november 10 what the schools are helping america to achieve in child health and protection wednesday november 11 what the schools are helping america to achieve in citizenship and loyalty to law thursday november 12 what the schools are helping america to achieve in improvement of rural living friday november 13 what the schools are helping america to achieve through a higher level of intellectual life saturday november 14 what the schools are helping america to achieve through the enrichment of adult life sunday november 15 what the schools are helping Helpin america to achieve through H high Ig b ideals of character and home life locally the topics selected are being discussed in the various departments part ments of the high school as well uell as the junior high and in the grades |
