Show FOUR JUNIOR HI SCHOOLS to OPE IN THIS rich and varied curriculum made possible by change monday september 8 sevier district will open for the first time four regularly organized junior high schools the only exception that has to be made to this statement is the fact that in richfield because of lack of room the ninth grade will continue to attend school in the high school building in view of this change in organization the board of education has adopted some new policies the ninth grade now becomes a part of the junior jur bior high school system and as such will be given free schooling there are no charges of any kind to be made in the junior high school the tuition fee of heretofore paid by ninth grade pupils in high school is cancelled text books and supplies are furnished free there are no student body fees or laboratory charges of any kind however 1 pupils taking shop work or sewing are required to pay for the material used in making articles which they wish to take home for personal or family use the courses offered the junior high school pupils make up a rich and varied curriculum in continued on page 5 four junior high hig h schools to open in this district continued from page 1 addition to the regular academic subjects these pupils will be offered this year work in physical education and recreation patrons must not get the idea this is the same program as has been given in high school there will be no coaches in the junior high and by action of the board of education n no competitive work of any kind will be carried on among the junior high schools of this district there will vill be competition organ ived within each school but solely for the purpose of giving every boy and girl a chance to indulge in some form of sports the ideal is every pupil in the activity work in chorus and band will be offered in each junior high school and in some schools orchestra work will be started there will be glee clubs organized and other musical activities arranged to the end that every pupil may be brought into some form of this work literature is being offered this year not as a part of the english class and constituting a study of one or two classics but as a separate course in free reading the sole aim is to discover the pupils reading interests and then direct them toward a bigger and better variety of things in reading home economics has undergone some changes also from the old type in addition to the cooking and sewing this course will include such things as personal care hospitality and etiquette some art and design the work is is arranged so that by the end of the ninth grade the girls will have leave had bad a chance to do work in a half dozen different lines of home economics and then will know if they wish to continue in specialized courses in the senior high in shop in monroe elsinore and salina all the hoys boys will have a chance to take tin and iron work this constitutes planning and making seven articles for the home from tin anti and electing some articles which he be may wish to make from iron the articles are turned out in a finished style from the shop and may be added to the home or sold by the pupil if he be desires in richfield the woodwork will continue through this year as the shop here was alas already fairly well equipped for this work vork next year the courses in tin and iron will be added in the junior high the entire purpose is to discover and develop the interests of all the pupils there are no marks no grades no report cards card s no red tape just working with adolescent young people cople p to get their interests active so they may be developed |
