Show FELT OR IN SUM I 1 BEET HISING director peterson and agronomist stewart make helpful analysis of condition that the decline in sugar beet growing in in utah should be looked upon as a highly unfavorable development in agriculture is the alie vie view held both by professor william peterson director and by dr george stewart agronomist of the utah agricultural experiment station in an informal depoi t just issued these men both feel somewhat sonie what alarmed about the decided dow downward nvard trend in the production of beets during the last few years as a result of which several lac factories tories have been removed to other states in 1919 and 1920 there was somewhat more than a hundred thousand th acres of beets in utah since that time thele has been a definite downward trend until in 1327 the acreage was only about to the leport deport says possibly the acres of 1920 was somewhat moie than our nor normal production noute would warr warrant ant on the other liand hand it is is certain that more than would be most profitable both to the sugar factories and to the fa fai imars it is thought that utah should be able to produce to SO acres to very good advantage the importance of sugar beets in utah is brought out by the fact that in 1927 moie than 13 per cent of the total farm value of all crops in utah was as derived from sugar beets in spite pite s of the fact that only 5 per cent of our cropped area was in beets the principal chops to replace beets when ihen they are discontinued are alfalfa and grain and canning peas in certain regions in 1927 about 45 per cent of the total cropped acreage in utah was grown to alfalfa but this amounted to but 32 per cent of the crop value grain crops le ie presented 31 per cent of the acreage but only 22 per cent of the value the crop values 1 1 I 1 ies on the average aie nearly three times as great for sugar beets as for hay lay and grain canning peas have high acle acie values but should be so handled as to 0 o supplement rather than to compete with rith suc ar beet it is is recognized director peterson and dr stewart go on to sa that in certain sea seasons soni there have been partial crop failures with sugar beets certain root rot diseases disease i and leafhopper white fly injury have been largely responsible howe however v er cageful studies have shown the leafhopper injury to have been greatly overestimated overestimate that is the rot troubles have been in many areas much the more damaging in view of this fact and in view of definite evidence to the effect that cageful manu and soil moisture control will in a measure avoid heavy losses flom lot it is thought the situation is is much more hopeful than it has been regarded to be by many banners fan ners moreover it is is hoped that in the next few years a strain of beets resist resistant ant to leafhopper injury can be developed bv the pro proper r plant breeding methods although t this is work is a major task the root rot may in part be remedied through the work which is now nov being done by the plant pathology departments department of the state ex experiment nt stations and by the bureau of plant industry of the federal government there is also a careful investigation being made as to the best varieties barie ties of sugar beets for normal conditions continued on page eight alarm felt over decline in sugar beet rai raising sil 19 continued from page one professor Peter and dr stewart urge as important to utah fann farmers the ready and stable market for beets as opposed to the erratic one for potatoes and sonic bome other crops ll 11 in some regions region during 1927 potatoes largely replaced beets with disastrous effects on price of potatoes there is never in an over production pi of sugar beets nor does the fari farmer ner have to worry about storage as lie he fie does docs for potatoes other points of real into D which we cannot enter here the report says are arc the close and the favorable relationship bet between cen the livestock industry and sugar beets both as to feed and a as to manure anure produced sugar beets a and Z livestock supplement each other in the most I 1 desirable fashion moreover beets beet are very valuable in the much needed rotation system with good and rotation anti and proper weed control which is facilitated by hoed crops such a as beets acre yields are in niana man cases so 0 o increased as to permit the growing of 20 to 25 per cent of the acreage in beets and still not reduce the amount of 0 ther other crops I 1 bar vested Fa Faim inicis cis are arc urged to use manure more thoroughly and not to astel aste this valuable asset as is still lone done in in many localities careful attention to to plowing to weeds and to care of the glowing crop would woul d probably pio bably increase inci ease ense the yield 2 or 3 tons tong of beets in ordinary oid old inary seasons and largely prevent heavy crop losses los ses in in i financial welfare in payroll checks check and in taxes driving out factories would not only reduce prices of other farm commodities but would greatly increase tax burdens on the land by removing several million dollars worth of visibly taxable property thinning and topping employ our boys in slack sea seasons ons while there are some arguments on the other side of the question these are so strongly and definitely outweighed a as s to make the case for the beets clearly one of advantage to agriculture some land such as that infested with nematodes ani and very heavy swampy areas should not be seeded to sugar beets without pro per preparation recognition of this fact in no way prevents a reasonable and permanent development on land properly adapted for beets this report should not be regarded mcg ard a as a prediction of prospects for this season reason because it is yet too early to mako make such a prediction either favorably or unfavorably occasional droughts anti and occasional leafhopper epidemics may be expected but should not be regarded as fatal in conclusion we are urging a definite permanent and united policy on tile the farms farm of utah for higher acre yields and better market values just now one of the important things deserving attention over a period of several years year is a somewhat increased acreage of sugar beets and a considerably sider ably increased acre yield due to and careful tillage meanwhile a united effort in leafhopper losses should be made naiema A h among trac friday march 30 saturday march 31 the denver nde me 0 o J J 0 v
