Show FOREST WEEK FROM iphil 22 TO 20 president coolidge issues proclamation I 1 la setting da dates tes and explaining purpose signed by president Pies ident coolidge and countersigned counter signed by secretary of state frank B kellogg the following proclamation la was issued under tinder late date of february 24 I 1 for several years a special week has haa been set apart for public discussion of our forests and of what must be done to safeguard and restore them among the agencies making for progress pro giess in this direction american foiest week has proved its usefulness anti and I 1 am glad to proclaim it again and to announce that canada is again concurrently observing a similar week the rehabilitation of our forests demands first of all that the forest fire evil be suppressed many of the forested states with the coo cooperation lle ration of timberland owners have undertaken organized protection against forest fires and in recent years under the clarke mcnary law the federal era government lias has given its sup continued on page eight OBSERVE AMERICAN FOREST WEEK FROM APRIL 22 TO 28 9 n continued from page one port to the movement this great cooperative enterprise must be extended and strengthened until every forested county in the united states is safeguarded against forest fires but ke e are still for from the goal of complete protection ever every y year on the average files scourge our woodlands steadily undermining their vitality for this bad situation the blame falls equally on us all public agencies rarely provide adequate protection against file the timberland tim beiland oner is too often india celent to his pi pip perty the forest worker is too often neg neglectful of the future forest the average citizen is too often careless with fire in the woods we must all gain such respect for the foiest that its destruction through indifference or carelessness shall be unthinkable we can not permanently abuse our forests with impunity the soil is the ithe ultimate source of all our wealth and of life itself one fourth of our american soil is best suited for forests much of this land is already idle more of it is being made idl idle e by destructive logging and fire yet we can not safely permit our forest land to lie fallow and useless any more than cje e can pen permit nit our farms and factories to eidle M li idle to make our vast empire of forest land fully productive of continuous crops of timber will have momentous consequences in our national life it will give agli agriculture culture the advantages of a new and valuable crop it will affeld permanent employment to millions of men in the forest forea industries it will provide raw material for many industries it will furnish traffic for railroads it will maintain foreign and domestic commerce it will restore our forests a aa con of soil and water and as givers of health arid and pleasure plea suie to our people we already have made a beginning in forest renewal but the task is stupendous pen dous and we should permit no satisfaction over what lias has been done to build to the magnitude of what remains to be done now therefore 1 I calvin coolidge president of the united states of america do hereby designate and set aside as ameri american can forest week the week beginning april 22 and ending april 28 in this year of 1928 I 1 recommend to the governors of the various states that they also designate this week for special observance by all our people and that where practicable and not in conflict with law or custom arbor day bs be observed during the course of the same week I 1 urge that during that week all citizens arid and appropriate organizations including public officials legislators business organizations educators editors clergymen landowners and others give thought to the preservation and wise use of our forests to the end that energetic forest policies will aill be adopted in all communities in witness whereof I 1 have hereunto set my mv hand and caused the seal of the united states to be affixed done at the city of washington this alth lay day of february in the year of our loid one thousand nine hundred and twenty I 1 eight and of the independence pen d dence once of the united states of america the one hundred and fifty sec ond by the pies president ident calvin coolidge secretary of state k frank B kellogg |
