Show SHIER POTATO BUMPER CROP potato fields field in north end of sevier county inspected by potato experts fifty potato glowers representing richfield joseph annabella salina arioni and redmond formed a caravan and left the warehouse of tile sevier valley mercantile co friday at 2 p ni ill for an inspection of the potato fields under contract of tile the salina produce association the redmond fields were the first toured tile the party then going to the fields west of salina and continuing the journey to aurora in the late afternoon most potato fields were covered in the two days and in most cases the condition and the growth howth of the seed were highly encouraging 1 to the biow ers as well as a project leaders the fields great care had been taken in planting panting and culli cultivation aaion of the seed and bioni present indications the farmers will be repaid for their work when the crops are harvested heber J webb inspector of hay grain and seed in ill utah made no hesitancy in stating that farmers in this locality should not be surprised were they to receive from 25 oto bushels of potatoes to the acre statements which were most gratifying to the growers were i ere also made by dr F E stevens Sl ovens crop pest inspector of the state bureau of agriculture professor J C hogansen eten extension sion agronomist of the U A C F J kjar district inspector and county agent S R boswell all of whom assist assisted td in making the inspection wednesday afternoon a similar trip was ivas made to the mattsson on ranch in salina canyon by A C prows max ma cohen barnard mattsson mattson mr kjar and mr barrett conditions here were vere found to be equally encouraging it being noted that the ground contained those chose elements aich which are the best for the raising of seed potatoes the soil in the valley according to professor hogansen is more adapted for potatoes for commercial use this is the first year potato raising has been done on any large scale in sevier county and the results are very encouraging to the fa farmer riner the salina produce association who have the potatoes under contract expect to be able to ship some thirty cars this fall and if their plans for next net year materialize they will have cars for market in the fall of 1928 |
