Show CHICAGO CONEN tion OF SCHOOL superintendents state superintendent ir dr jensen gives interesting report in a letter to superintendents of schools in utah uta h dr C N jensen state superintendent of public instruction st gives a very interesting report of the convention ot of school superintendents held in chicago two weeks ago he says in part the 1924 convention was quite generally acclaimed the finest meeting the department has ever held state county city and district superintendents from every section of the country were mere there as well as a number of university presidents and the leaders of numerous teachers colleges both public and private from all parts of the united states no other gathering brings t together gether 0 so large a proportion of those who shape and direct the educational forces of the nation it is estimated that eight or nine thousand educators were in attendance 4 in all things said and done at the convention it was manifest that education is rapidly becoming more important in our national life its ita rapidly growing importance is an inevitable outcome of the ever increasing demand created b by y modern life it was shown that an enlarged and a morel more effective educational program must be put into operation while there was no tendency manifested to discard any vital part of the traditional programs or policies it was very evident that nothing traditional would be held sacred which would not stand the test of scientific demonstration r it was equally apparel apparent n t that nothing is to be incorporated in the new program which has not been tested and found indispensable thes the acquisition of knowledge or the triine training g in things without proper functional value were in disfavor at this convention ven tion it was noted that ways and means must be used to measure results accurately and that when un satisfactory results are produce produced dhe the proper remedy must be applied J among amon the many individual experimentations pai nov being carried on two might be mentioned aae one relates to individualized instruction the other to character education the first gives hope that in the not distant future ways and means will be discovered whereby all children gifted or otherwise will have an opportunity of working according to their several abilities the superior or gifted pupils will not be held back because of unwisely organized classes or unwise teaching procedure neither will the backward or slow pupils be expected and urged to keep apace with the fast working children each will work workmen ton essential common problems accord ing to his ability and in addition each will be given work best suited to his particular capacities and tastes 1 A As 1 to character education the I so school hoo men feel keenly the responsibility which rests upon them they know that the mere acquisition of knowledge does not develop character the leaders in character education are at work on a program which was found to be much the same as our own state school program dean milton bennion 1110 TI is the chairman of the state committee on character education which is now preparing an outline to be used after this school year as a supplement to the utah state course of study it was a pleasure to note that utah is well up with the best thought of the nation in character edu education catlon As before stated the whole convention sensed the importance of education everyone was aware that the educational problem is bigger and more nar difficult than ever before the nation itself is aware of the tremendous task imposed on n the educator of today it knows there can be no step backward it knows that his bis work is vital to the tha life of the nation and that while universal education necessarily entails the expenditure of large sums of money such expenditures are fully justified the mayor of chicago in his address declared that money spent tor for education wisely ls is money well spent the nature of the work now lying ahead of the educator is such as to call for a high degree of preparation ani and skill it cannot be done by low priced and interior inferior individuals the th product of the schools must more mor than ever show itself in improved improve character and in increased social and industrial dr jensen also elates in his hip report that at the convention art an agreement was reached with some som prominent educators of the surrounding states to have a meeting of school administrators including Inc ludine principals in neaz by districts districts ji salt L lako lake ako city april 4 and 5 6 for the purpose ot of discussing educational problems of common and 9 i vital interest school super superintend intend eata and others other q kho come t to 0 salt lake at this flint oc 4 yep ye P bould to bo be in att C ci pies 1183 ot of the program and other uen ak relating to tue tile gathering 93 wW wi jbf tent ant at an early date e y w |
