| Show THE SHE DAUGHTERS OF UTAH PIO by james H moore professor howard R driggs sas the pioneer movement across the american continent is the warp of pur our civilization the great question now is ie he says will the warp hold and then he answers yes if stories of pioneer life are preserved for future generations the pioneer movement to utah was only a part of the great western migration ini gration but it has a unique place in western history it is similar to the coming of the pilgrims to massachusetts Eachus etts they like the pilgrims came in order that they might worship god according to the dictate of their own conscience on july 24 1847 just seventy six years ago the pioneers entered salt lake valley within one generation a miracle has been wrought for much progress has been made in the development of this vast western territory but what hat are we doing to preserve the relics and stories of pioneer days there are some people who doing much along this thib line but they are greatly handicapped the daughters of utah pioneers is such an organization the maor major aim or this organization is to collect pioneer relics and to hunt out and preserve stories of pioneer life that have not yet et found their way into print the headquarters of this ladies organization is in room of the state capitol the present officers are honorary presidents maria M a r 1 a young dougall sarah jenne cannon and sarah J rich miller president flora B horne home let vice president julia P AT farnsworth 2nd and vice president donnette S kesler corresponding secretary sazie heath historian emeline Y wells librarian zina young card registrar bertha al gray treasurer elizabeth T beer chaplain sarah jenne cannon auditor amdi tor lydia D juder alder organizer ga nizer elizabeth P haywood chorister esther davis stephens organist miss lola nelson nelc on to be eligible for membership one must be a direct descendant of a utah pioneer A pioneer according to the constitution of this organization is ia a man or woman who came to utah prior to 1869 the year the birst transcontinental railroad was completed ll 11 it might be supposed b by y bo some me that the organization Is ie denominational in nature bince most of the utah pioneers were embers members m in of the mormon church this however is not the case it is not a church organization iza tion it is interesting fo t 0 nafe no e in this thi B connection tb that atone of device tb evice presidents Is ie a member ember m of the presbyterian by terian terlan church one requirement of the ne new members of the organization is that they write arite short stories of the dives of thier pioneer ancestors these stor 1 JC les 5 are being preserved and later will vill be published they will III no doubt make interesting utah history the daughters of I 1 utah pioneers Pioneer receive no fin financial aid from the mate nor from the churches their 0 only source of revenue is the dues ot of their members which is very nominal the initiation tee fee is fifty cents and thereafter tho the annual fee is thir ty ity five cents in connection wit with their exhibit at the state capitol they also maintain a stand where they sell post card views of salt lake city and vicinity and some descriptive books on utah from this they derive bome revenue during the twenty two years the organization of the daughters ot of utah pioneers many relics of pioneer days have be been en collected and C t 1 9 are now exhibited at the state elate caal tf tol 1 these so relics consist of all sorts sort tg of abi things aiom the light agon oace owned by brigham young to a made of wheat straw there are yokes okes spinning wheels looms saddles hand carts guns machines quilts wax fruit dishes carpets farm implements carved furniture writing desks and various kinds of fancy work fashioned pictures and many relics of 0 value to people who the memory of those who hardships to make our state what is today according to mrs emeline Y wells historian of the organization there are a number of the counties of the state well organized it is the intention of the officers she said to carry on the work until every county in the state is completely organized with local chapters in every community where ever there are local chapters they take an active part each year in the celebration of pioneer day and try especially to entertain the few remaining pioneers who came to utah before the year |
