| Show BOOKS there Is much better literature in the world than can be found in the average magazines that are read so eagerly by the general american public but when traveling by train from richfield to salt lake city with nothing to do but look out of the window for seven long hours one is glad gidd to get hold of one of those time killing devices printed in millions of copies all over the united states such was our frame ot of mind on a trip lately in most of the magazines the advertising pages contain better fiction than the so called short stories and novels and first of all we glanced over the advertisements verti and there we found something that we might call symptomatic to the magazine we had got hold of published not less than five advertisements for books judging from the number of these advertisements their size and makeup the publishers of books are doing good business with them and apparently they are selling freely this brings up the ju question estion does the american public really need books we are inclined to answer yes true the formulas and precepts ot of the books are caricatured by cartoonists and laughed about by humorists yet when one goes about and sees the bad manners displayed by a multitude of 0 people many of whom have wealth and position it might be a good idea it if a lot of these folks pondered upon these works it is often a hard proposition to teach good manners to young people some of them are of the th so I 1 clety type and take as naturally to good form as a fish swims in the sea but others who often have substantial worth look at the customs of society as of trifling importance some ot of these theme customs are deeply rooted and you could not possibly shake them even it if it could be demonstrated that a knife is the best implement with which to eat pie jl 41 would io be as difficult cult to get such an innovation sanctioned as to have a constitutional amendment passed by and raffled by 36 state legislatures there are many worthy people who are ignorant of these fixed conventions of society some of the folks who eat with th their knives and fall all to tou touch h their hats to ladies are doing splendid work in the world in spite of their unconventional nal breaks they may be regarded with contempt by persons of far less lehs real worth it is much better to conform to so social lal custom in such matters and it helps ones advancement in all ways common sense persons however regard the eti of society as a flexible aible matter where judgment and common sense should rule many people disregard many conventional rules yet have very graceful manners because they are always thinking of other people ae and performing little acts of coure sy and service |
