with our county fair association the outlook is that the year 1923 1 again will pass into history without a sevier county fair anere is howonec ho howo woNer er not all hope lost jost yet perhaps Perli aps away will nill be found to overcome oer the difficulties but chances ale aie diminutive to explain mattei s it is necessary to stait from the beginning an and things as they developed since the new hoard board of fair directors was elected in ili tile the meeting of life members of the fair association held saturday Satu iday may 10 the present board of directors c consists of AV W D fitzgerald of glenwood president geo henderson of joseph josah vice president C AV haley of central edward erickson of venice W V L warner of richfield john webb of 1 monrae D G burgess of salina L P hansen of richfield RIchtie ld and joseph F peterson of redmond representing the board of county commissioners ners directors C AV powell jr was appointed to act as secretary and treasurer the board held several meetings and also conferences with the sevier county farm bureau and the commercial clubs ot of richfield monroe and salina and after a very thorough deliberation and discussion it was found that conducting a fair resembles conducting a war in that the first prerequisite are finances several means of raising funds were proposed and of all the propositions the only feasible one was to be to money by taxation the law permits a levy 0 of f 02 mill for such purposes and the county commissioners therefore were requested to make such a I 1 levy elly which means for 1000 assessed the commissioners were somewhat reluctant in making a decision to that effect mainly tor for the reason that taxes are high anyway and fear ing that people might kick it burdened with another levy they came to the conclusion that it might be better to make an all appropriation for the fair out of the general county fund and decided on an appropriation of this amount the fair board found would be entirely in adequate there was no fair held last bear ear the grounds have not been cared for since 1921 and buildings stalls tents are in such a deplorable condition that it would take figuring conservatively about 2000 to get them in fit proper shape again A levy of 02 mill would about yield the amount needed but with the appropriated the work could not bo be undertaken again the fair board conferred with farm bdeau and commercial club and a delga tion or of members of those three bodies appeared before the commission cis to make another appeal tor for tile the levy the commissioners took tile tho matter iatter undo nude advisement tor for several I 1 days and finally informed tile tho fair committee that they decided to stand pat on oil the amount appropriated refusing to decree tho the levy this Is the present status of things the commissioners standing pat and the fair committee unable to a go ahead without the necessary necesS tiry funds continued on page eight county comity pair fair like H hrire nl tobe to be or not re c be continued Continue I from page 1 that the county needs and ought to have a fair is absolutely clear and is not argued from any party at all that the farmers the business men and the population in general want a fair has been made clear and is not disputed elthea but no ticky no io washy without money a fair cannot be prepared the fair committee worked liard harcum to make the fair a go and especially fitzgerald erickson and secretary powell i left no stone unturned no step undone to get things going a yet as stated state d above chances for a fair in 1923 are very small and hile they are so the directors have not given up all hope one way v ay under consideration is to appeal to the business men of the county to sign a guarantee to e fund A serious obe objection oti p alit that way is that the business men have so often been made to carry the brunt and burden that the fair committee to approach them again besides the fair is not a business mans dundei taking but is ib a county affair bene titling fitting the farmers preeminently eminently pre and the entire county population ot of which the business men are only a traction fraction so there is another way to get the entire tire population farm bureau locals and and commercial clubs included to let the commissioners know that a tax levy is wanted for the purpose of the fair we understand perfectly why and nd wherefore the commissioners are reluctant to decide on a i lerv evv but if it is made clear to them that the people wont object that the really want the levy they probably will aaice to ni make ake a devi derision to that effect they often enough declared that chev con coi ilder ider themselves 0 of the people and willing to do their bidding wo we do not have the slightest doubt in theli sincerity and willingness to servo serve the people to the best bec t of their ability it night might then not be amiss to try to obtain in an espre jon from the people at large especially especial lv fa farmers and business men regarding their wish to have lave a fair and malo male the fair possible by a as ai levy but whatever there will be lone done it must be done quickly it will take several weeks to get mich an egression and then only two months will v all be left to prepare and arran arrange e things and this is a mighty might short time now let us see what the next net stop step will be we take thi occasion to correct a slight error in giving the fair dates we stated in our last issue that if at all the fair will be held thins day friday and Satu saturday iday september 6 7 and 8 the dates decided upon by bythe the az nir fair committee are in wednesday thursday and ana friday Sen 5 6 and 7 |
