that mr died at noon that day at palo alto california the friends at 01 mr air were ere aare that his condition had been serious for se several veral months but they were nere hopeful that he would rally and recuperate at e the news of ills his demise came cain as a distinct shock I 1 it t will lie he I 1 le that mr and mrs hartmann Hoti mann and their son floyd left here over a year since tor san diego lit in the hope that tile the aea level sea breezes and warmth or of that wonderful land of promise would conquer tile the malady of hardening of art ai teries train from which mr holtmann hoffmann was nias suffering they did not dispose of their property hero here as they fully expected to return to this valley vaclev success and happiness hail had been achieved by them them the journeyed to the golden state with hopes high and anticipating a speedy return to health for mr Hoffina hoffmann nn the change of climate and absolute rest lid did a lot to restore mr hoffmann to a manns condition became worse all that medical skill could do for him was done and with the careful attention attention given by mis hoffmann the pleasant surroundings and the salubrious climate of the coast should have contributed tri buted to an early recovery but the ravages of disease had marked mr hoffmann for its own and he died as he had lived fighting the battle and playing laying lifes game squarely to the last E E hoffmann was born in indiana ag years ago after leaving college he came west he taught school in california and nevada in order to get a foothold before taking up the practice of law he came to richfield 25 years ago and opened a law office his absolute fearlessness honesty and attention to details soon won azon him recognition and he became the attorney for the annie laurie mining company the florence mining company the bully boy and the log cabin companies he was also attorney for the sevier valley canal eom company pany his connection with mining and irrigation companies made him turn his attention to mining and irrigation law in which two branches of the law lie he became an expert and an authority he was one of the original ancor pora tors of the richfield commercial and savings bank and drafted the articles of incorporation tor for that institution he was a stockholder and director up until his demise he was strong in his convictions and fearless in his bis dealings he knew but two sides in any transaction right and wrong and lie he was always found on the side of right as he understood it he had little patience with expediency in his handling I law when lie he undertook the famous birdsall case involving the title to certain lands situated in sevier county for many years in utah it had been the custom for ecclesiastical courts to arrange compromises in disputes arising between members of tile the church this condition had prevailed from the early settlement days in the birdsall case the high council of sevier take stake had heard beard the evidence presented in the dispute and following doi lever undisputed custom and had adjudicated the matter and presumably had settled it mr hoffmann Hoft mann was later consulted in the matter and he took the ground that the high council had acted without jurisdiction he took the matter into court and obtained a decision that forever set a at t r rest e st the line of between the ecclesiastical and judicial jurisdiction in ill utah the case is recorded in the utah law reports and it brought mr hoffman into the limelight in law circles locally he held the office of city attorney for several years was attorney for the sevier school district attorney for the sevier valley canal company and was district attorney for several years until his health compelled him to give this up he was active in politics and an ardent party worker fraternally lie he was a member of hiram lodge no 12 F and A M and was in turn past grand master and was deputy grand lecturer of the utah grand lodge he was a 32 nd degree man and was a member of el Kalah Temple of mystic Sh shrivers he was also a member of 0 tile the local 1 I 0 0 F fraternity mr ar hoffmann still held his property here in richfield Richtie ld at the time of 0 his death and lie he had a host of friends here interment took place at palo alta last monday to E E hoffmann Hoft mann these lines of a writer apply and
