Show A STEP TOWARDS GOOD sportsmanship SPORT MANSHIP we are in receipt of the colloy following 1 letter which speaks for itself dr markus arkus NI editor richfield reaper my dear dr markus an instance occurred in the game between and monroe I onroe last saturday evening which has led to a cistin misunderstanding derstad ding if you can call give space to this note I 1 believe that this misunderstanding can be cleared up during the progress of the game at a moment when excitement was most keen mr ir ashton the referee was called to the scorers table for consultation regarding personal fouls from several quarters of the building improper and remarks were shouted on the spur of the moment I 1 jumped to my feet called attention to the improper conduct and reminded the spectators that mr ashton represent the state committee in ili charge of high school athletics and was reputed to be one of all the best officials in the state inasmuch as the improper comments had come from every quarter of the building I 1 intended my remarks for those individuals located in every quarter of the building and most certainly had no intention of 0 direct direction in ithem toward any part of the house inasmuch as some have felt that I 1 directed my remarks toward one quarter of the building more than to another I 1 am anxious for everyone who was present at that arime L me to understand that I 1 had not 11 noticed improper remarks as coming from any particular section of the house and that I 1 certainly did not intent intend my remarks for foi any particular part of the room but I 1 intended them solely and only for those individuals divi duals wherever they were in the building who had betrayed ay at spirit at a meeting of tile the principals and coaches held saturday afternoon just before the game mr ir ashton had told us its how the spirit of good manship nian ship had improved remarkably during the past two years in certain sections of the state by the coaches teams and spectators learning to inspect the officials who had been chosen to handle the game gaine it seems to mo me that the spirit of good sport manship in ili sevier division too lias has improved during the past few years but we have not all learned yet that criticism of an official who has been mutually aniced upon by the representatives senta tives es of the teams involved is altogether out of place improper and an evidence of poor sportsmanship this is one stop step in ili advance which I 1 believe we should all recognize and take nt once yours very cordially THEO D MARTIN |
