| Show SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION AND EDUCATION WEEK school board election was held this week and education week is more than half over those two events coincided and while it was not a prearranged coincidence it is nevertheless a good one school boards are tile the authorities who will have to see to it that we have not only education weeks but education deais meaning that everybody in this country has to think and work for good education of our children the year round nation and state stale now depend upon their citizens of 0 legal age in ten years they will be depending upon the children of today if these children are arc not well taught properly taught highly taught the future citizens of america will be ig ignorant unable to think to plan to carry on oil this our nation in its forward course we should always think or of the somewhat shameful condition that the united states has the highest percentage ot of illiteracy of ct the leading enlightened nations of the world about thirty times as high as tor for instance germany improvement and increase in the number of schools will be the first step necessary to remedy this defect and why ae iff this defect the primary reason af of it is that the teaching staffs of our public schools are inadequate and the reason for this inadequacy is that mostly those in in authority do not see with sufficient breadth of vision that teaching is highly skilled specialized work vork requiring the highest type of manhood and womanhood and deserving an all adequate wage vage because teachers salaries are universally so low those who stick to that noble profession do so BO from love of it from love of its ideals broin from a sense of duty and the religion of service because teachers salaries are universally so low the youth of our land is not attracted to the normal school and the teachers college young men desire to enter occupations which assure them of comfort and a reasonable luxury young oung women more and more taking their places in the economic structure of our country are preparing themselves tor for other vocations where the ledwards are commensurate with the preparation pa ration the effort the education and the ability required if tile the child of today is the voter and perhaps the legislator and the president of tomorrow then the teacher of today is the maker of the nation of tomorrow the best of teachers paid well enough to enable them to give their best to our children should be none too good for america if education week can av aken the electorate to the need of the best the need of paying for the best it will not be held in ili vain and it if the board members elected wednesday will keep in mind the lesson that education week ought to teach we will have an adequate teaching stair and a proper supervision of tb the stafi staff not a crippled one like at present when we do not have a music supervisor |
