| Show OUR ROAD PROBLEMS representatives of six counties wayne sanpete San pete sevier piute diute gar lold and kane met here friday to discuss their common problem of good toads loads leading through their respective communities arto the southern boundary line of the state it was a unity ot of purpose Eel and from this unity developed the other one a unanimity of opinion to be bear ar pressure upon the competent authorities to the effect to have the road from nephi through sanpete San pete sevier plute garneld garf beld and kane counties designated as a primary load so federal aid can be obtained to tho the amount of 0 eighty per cent in constructing such a road where construction is necessary and to pave it where pavement will make it a permanent asset the necessity of good roads is a subject so old and so much discussed that it would mean bringing owls to athens to dwell upon this topic any an 3 longer the question here will be a monetary one a calculation as to the possibility and advisability to raise one fifth of the money required for the purpose in order to receive the other tour four fifths from the U S congress As to the first the possibility there is no doubt that in fact it is no problem at all the county is free from bonded indebtedness our credit is good the bonding houses will nill gladly buy our bonds and the money van can be had bad so to speak on short notice and how about the advisability pe L S the first thing to be considered is the question of taxation 1 involved our present levy for road purposes is two mills and with the money derived from this small levy we barely can take care of the most necessary repairs on our state and county roads making the levy just a trifle higher will result in raising enough annually to pay annuities and interest tor for a bond issue extended over twenty years so a raise in taxes would not take place at all or if it would it would be so nominal that it will hardly be noticeable the next question will be what are we going to puy for the bond money As explained before the money will be spent on road making and road paving to which we will have to contribute one fifth while the government will furnish four fifths this means in plain english that with one dollar collir of our money we ne can buy tour four dollars ot of federal motley money Is this not a proposition that sounds alluring Is it sot an that comes only once in a generation then those five dollars combined will he be utilized in building roads that will be the blood carrying vessels the arteries for our community life that will prove to us of untold benefit the commercial intercourse between the counties traversed by such a road would be pleasure able and profitable at the same time and besides this a road to the scenic wonders of our part of the country would make these wonders still more attractive and for this reason more frequented the values so coming to the communities along the road would make up for increased taxes if there be any at all tenfold and hundredfold all those benefits we can haie hae if ve ne properly go after them so why not go after them |
