all the way i from zion national park they did not sl see e a prettier cleaner and more inviting city than our dear old richfield they them predicted a great future for our city provided that we keep up in good hotel accommodations and try our best to have good roads many thousands of 0 tourists will go to see bryce canyon and zion park and most of them will pass through richfield the logical distributing center for the tourist trado trade the visitors were stephen T mather director of national parks D L reaburn former director of mt AR rainier national park and noy now on the retired list temporarily as he said F r L townsley chief ranger of national parks and their chauffeur W B morse they were returning from the dedication and christening of the zion park and mr mather was enthusiastic about this wonderful country giving special credit to private citizens who did their utmost to make the roads passable and like R C stretton Sy the edge of brytos canyon to give tourists accommodations in board and lodging about the dedication we read in our cedar cay contemporary the iron county record although the impressive dedication program did not take place until september there was an instructive tive and interesting impromptu program in zion national park on the evening of the speeches by various visitors were interspersed with music by the cedar city and st george bands and songs by the popular ariel quartet of salt lake city among those called on for talks was S J foster president of the cedar city commercial club who gave an interesting account of what the people of 0 cedar are doing and attempting for the development of southern utah after the program a dance was given in the wylie camp dining room where formal introductions were dispensed with and a true holiday spirit was felt by the entire gathering dedication day began with a fitting and truly thrilling daybreak awakening to the strains of the star spangled banner by the cedar bane ban although the gathering of 0 close to a thousand people in one narrow canyon aar from any city was bound to be attended with some small drawbacks and dis comforts the descom amoded made no whine nor protest to mar the spirit odthe of the day the crowd was there for a great purpose and all minor matters were disregarded As for instance the lack of blankets to go with the flue fine army bents tents made a short but powerful address after which the st georgo george band played ex governor william spry and mayor C clarence of salt lake city spoke fittingly followed by a song by the ariel quartet the next speakers sr eakers were W W wylle wylie of the wylie camps W S bassenger of the union pacific railroad system and W H comstock general manager of oc the salt lake route the cedar city band then gave aavo a selection followed jy by talks from hon joseph S snow of george D S spencer of 0 the oregon short line and president heber J grant after another selection by tho the ariel quartet C G plummer of salt lake city spoke and the program came to a close with the singing of the star spangled banner by the gathering accompanied by the bands lands space will not allow the reproduction of any of the addresses though they were worth preserving but it will bo be of interest to residents of cedar city to know that the speakers gave this place full and flattering credit for the attractive part she has taken in preparing tor for and welcoming of not only the cedar breaks but of zion park grand canyon and braces canyon in his remarks mr mather told the people of utah they would now have to got get busy and prepare to care properly tor for the tourists and follow the lead of cedar city which he commended for building the big hotel now under construction and for advertising ver all the scenery of utah impartially director mather went from richfield to salt lake city for a conference with governor bamberger and the state road commission to talk over the road problems in connection with opening southern utah to the tourist traffic mr mother mather declares declare that the north rim of the grand canyon is far ahead of the southern rim from the scenic viewpoint the party saw something like deer daei and found traces of mountain lion there while flowers and vegetation surpass those thosa of 0 the southern rim much improvement work will have to bo be done on this pirt part
